I really thought w00t came from "what" instead of hoot. Like, you kill someone and you say "What now?"... w00t... dunno.

This is not a BBC news site, this is a BBC sponsored community site, h2g2. Based on the concept of a universal guide to everything, this is a site where people can come to write articles and reference anything they like, and discuss it within a community. Very good idea really, you should try it (just be civil).

Woot comes from the Marines, where they say woot instead of yes. "Everyone ready?" everyone: "Woot"

Depends on which marines you're talking about. Marines in the armed forces usually reply with "HUA!", which stands for "Heard, Understood, Acknowledged".

Anyway, I tend to steer clear of that kind of typing for fear of my schoolwork suffering the wrath of my English teacher, although in games I tend to say "woot" after I've done something über, like xenocided five marines around an armory. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I personally rarely use "elite" speak excepting the following ocassions:
"bewm" - when something explodes in a spectacular fashion. Eg xenociding and setting off 20 tripmines and killing the entire marine team and their base (actually happened O_O)
"w00T" or "wewt" - expression of joy
"pwnt" or "prawned" - used to say someone has been beaten VERY badly - eg some nub in IRC getting banned for spamming his referal game link
That's about the limit of it. Anymore gets stupid IMO.

Hmm, i can't remember where i read this, it was years back, but i was to understand that "w00t" was derived from the term "root". If a "3r337 h4x0r" got "root", or did anything else cool, "w00t" would be used to express joy, very similar to saying "yay" or whatever.

    Who knows.

    Well here's <a href='http://www.faqs.org/docs/jargon/W/w00t.html' target='_blank'>one</a> page, and another <a href='http://www.security-forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7542' target='_blank'>forum thread</a> that mentions it, another thread that mentions it about <a href='http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/6/63/63150.html?p=4' target='_blank'>halfway down the page</a>, <a href='http://www.lojban.org/wiki/index.php/Internet%20'slang'' target='_blank'>at the bottom of this page</a> and an encyclopedia definition <a href='http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/W00t' target='_blank'>over here</a>.

Ok, i'm bored with digging up links on that, heh, but there you go. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yep I also coined the term "The Bomb" and I was the first to say "whatever" in a dismissive manner, and my friend bob was the first one to say "That's the sh!t".
