What vsync (Vertical Syncronization) does is it keeps your FPS capped at the monitor's current maximum frequency, i.e. on a monitor frequency of 85hz caps your FPS will be capped at 85fps (plenty for everyone).

When you turn VSync off, there is a lot of visual tearing on the polygons on your screen because your monitor can't keep up with what the video card is doing. Simply put, it makes things look ugly.

In the old old days of 3D cards when 30fps in 640x480 was simply amazing performance, it was highly recommended to turn Vsync OFF because your 30fps shot up to 45 or so. But nowadays where you'll be getting 100+ fps in anything out there today till HL2 or Max Payne 2 comes out, you want to leave VSync on.

If you're capped at 60fps rather than turning off Vsync I'd recommend you instead bump the monitor refresh rate from 60 to 85.

My monitor refresh rate is at 85, my fps_max is at 100 and I'm now running NS in 16 bit color. Needless to say, I'm <i>still</i> capped at 60 fps <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Heh - that's what I say to myself....you know...when I see all those folks in the "100 club." Funny thing IS that I USED to have a constant framerate of 100. I reinstalled Half-Life (can't remember why, come to think...), and it has never been the same.

CS, NS, HLDM - none are as they once were. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

lucky ****, most of the time my fps keeps at a constant 30 and might MIGHT shoot up to 60 and switch fast between 60 and 40, then back to 30 then down to 20 then back to 30 again.... my lag in servers is around 40-50, but i skip like hell because of my low fps rates...

isn't there some sort of limiter built into half-life you can turn off that caps your fps? I'm sure one of my friends mentioned it when I was miffed at my framerates =3

    fps_max 100

The default for that is 72 though, I don't know why it would be capped at 60.
