What Kind Of Microphone Do You Use?

Just wondering what kind of microphone setup you guys have that seems to work. Does anyone have a certain soundcard / volume / driver setup that allows them to not have to have the microphone almost touching their mouth?

I have to have my mic on pretty loud, but with steam ( it has the voice comm boost thing), it works great.

crappy mic, just right for crappy voice comm, never too loud or to calm in 30 cm distance.
Bad thing is the echo after 3 seconds of speaking.

I also use the mic that came with my computer. It actually works very good. So, there's no point of getting a new one.

What came with the computer? A lapel one? Monitor or stand mount?

I just got one from Game for £7 that does everything I want it todo and at a good quality, better than wasting £50+ on a special one.

Plantronics DSP400 is the absolute dogs bollocks and comes with a built in USB soundcard that is very high quality.

I have also used a cheaper, non usb Plantronics headset and that was very good with a Soundblaster AWE64Gold - or similar mid/high spec sb card.

I find it odd that while **** is blocked by the filter bollocks is not.

Well, it is a sitting one I guess. It isn't one that has a stand and then a neck coming up. It's just somewhat round and flat on the bottom and a little larger than a quarter. It has some slits on the top for the sound. So bascially, it's like one of those small bouncy balls cut in half with slots in the top.

I have the gain boosted REALLY HIGH AND the mic amp enabled, and I don't even talk, I just barely whisper and you can hear me really loud.

I hijacked my 3 year old mic from the computer room in our house. Its a Andrea NC-8 and it makes me sound like im dead, if not that then it makes me sound like I have a cold. Happens with my other friends that use it too.

I have a crappy mic/headphone set that's held together by some duct tape. Since I like to use real headphones when I'm gaming, I kind of wear my mic set like a necklace and point the microphone upwards close to my mouth. It works pretty well.

KOSS Optimus Pro-50MX. Excellent headset picked up for thirty bucks at Radio Shack, when they still carried them. Well padded earpieces, an aggressive noise-cancelling mic. Run the whole thing through a Sidewinder GameVoice puck hooked up to an SBLive! Value.

I use a logitech headset i bought when i was at LAN-ETS (a big 300+ lan party they hold all the time here in quebec).

It works quite well and is a hell of a lot better than that crappy desktop mic that came with my now no-longer-in-use Soundblaster Live

Oddly enough my audigy2 didn't come with a mic though, not like i'd use it anyhow. Desktop microphones are terrible. Gimme a headset anyday!

I use a Labtec desk mic. The mic is stuck on the right side of moniter with that double sided super tap stuff.

Labtec axis-502. Pretty nice. Different models ranging from $20-30 are all pretty good.

Basic requirements for a mic are really just that it will fit you comfortably and it's a headset. The kind that gets glued on top of your monitor are doomed to suck. A really nice mic will just have its quality dumbed down by HL for the sake of bandwidth anyways.

Something good to look for is a mic with good background noise reduction. Less static=good, and the effects aren't lost on HL.

I think some of the 3rd-party voice proggies have a higher sound quality ceiling, as well.

Labtec Axis 712 USB Headset/Microphone. 24.99$ USD through Amazon.com Merchants--Shipping included. Works great. Plug it into an available USB jack, and you're ready to go. Pretty good sound quality, both PC and Mac compatible, comfortable, and not too shabby on the pocketbook, either. It comes in one color, silver, and has ample length on the cord which passes through a small, silver box, which houses the external volume control and mute button, and sits on your desk. The silver box has a green status light for power, and a red for mute.

I have my settings pretty much maxed out as for the input volume, and input is crystal clear from this mic. My playback is about at half, but I adjust it from time to time depending upon the map and situation.

i ripped my mic out of an old boom box.. hot glued it to a small peice of plywood.. spliced the wires into a mic jack.. attached a swtich and glued tha t to the plywood too.. and connected it to my comp.. then packing taped the plywood to my desk.. so its always there to talk thru...

    Works exceptionally well though....

SDJASON, I think we all want to see a picture of that...

I have a Labtec microphone as well, its a headset... only I don't use it as a headset all that much. I wear it around my neck, a little bit like what Bigwig does. The sound is really nice, but unfortunatly, HL kills the quality so that I sound much like every other person you've ever heard over voice-chat.
