Between CD and VAC, why exactly do we need PB support?

EDIT: Omg t3h l337 EditZor!!
Yeah its dead for Half-Life, as they hit all they could do w/o complete access to the Half-Life source code, and Valve wasn't keen on supporting them.
But now they have a contract with id and provite Punkbuster support for all their games (Quake 3, RtCW, and even DOOM III) as well as a few liscencee engines (Soldier of Fortune II). Its a pretty good deal for all cause 1) the Punkbuster team is getting paid $$ to work on it, so they can make it their fulltime job and spend more time with the project and 2) they get complete support from id & co. such as access to the source code when they need it.
So Punkbuster is alive and well, just not for Half-Life anymore. :P
It just didnt work for HL thats all. As the conversation went when I was told PB was dead.
"Hey Avtomat, you know PB is dead?"
"WHAT, NO!!! WHY?"
"Well it was a great program, but it had a small flaw"
"What flaw?"
"It didnt stop cheats"
"oh"
They aren't going to support HL when there are already a large number of things that do the same thing. Especially when they can work on other thing and get paid for it.
