<div class="IPBDescription">...where's our kit?</div> y do the TSA send in vanilla marines to destroy an alien infestation?

surely they would send in heavy armour or Jetpacks with HMGs and GLs to eliminate the threat and not waste resources having to upgrade from scratch :S

(i like the game how it is, this thought just occured to me (sorry if this has ben posted b4))

    Because despite constillation efforts, the TSA is dirt poor.

    They gain their equipment onboard the ships they are fighting on, because they're effectively billing that ship the cost of their equipment.

    LOL mintman, im not saying the game is wrong im just asking why it has been done like this, i love the game and nothing wud stop me from playing it

    The research time is not so much research (all TSA tech exists prior to boarding) but is actually the time it takes to hack the local nanogrid constructor subroutines to produce military systems and equipment from the specifications loaded into the comm chair.

    lol, heavy casualties, totaly losing the USS_Nancy Cargo Ship...

    Those nasty governments have drastically slashed our funding budget to go spend it trying to find Weapons of mass destruction in other parts of the galaxy.

    I mean, thats why you dont even respawn with a full ammo load out we cant afford it lol.

    Basically, research isn't really "research" as such, it is programming the local nanogrid to accept the designs for weapons and such, as Seraphy said.

    As for why marines don't START with heavy armour ect, it would be too expensive to give every marine HA's.

    Personally I think there should be a game mode where marines start with all research, and aliens start with all hives and rts, but no starting resources or chambers. And the initial marines would all have heavy armour and HMGs (no GLs or shotties so that their hive-destroying ability is lowered a bit)

    This may sound unbalanced, but think about how it would go;

    Marines start with HA+HMGS, they go take a hive (maybe they should just start with a CC in a hive and no HA?), the skulks with xenocide counterattack causing a few HA casualties (bear in mind they wouldn't start with welders). By this time, a few aliens would have enougth res to go gorge and drop chambers, the others would be saving up, since there's no need to build rts.

    By this point it would (in theory) go like a normal game only starting in mid-game; marines have full upgrades so skulks get mowed down, but aliens with all nodes soon get enougth res to get a few lerks and fades, and the game begins to even out as the marines are forced to spread their forces.

    *edit* Oh, and the armslab is effectively removed from this mode. The proto lab is still needed to produce HA's and JPs, but it should probably cost a bit more seeing as it wouldnt depend on an armslab (and all armouries would be advanced). *edit*

    Imagine what would happen. Every node on the map would be capped by the aliens, all hives built, every strategically important location fortified, and every alien their choice of lifeform with 100 res in reserve. Even if the marines weren't wiped out in the opening seconds of the game, the aliens could overwhelm them with wave after wave of tactically superior units. In short, the marines would be screwed.

    The TSA succeeds where others have failed because they work fast. They dock with ships in hours instead of days, and can kill the infection before it spreads out of control. This approach can only be managed by keeping battle-ready transports in almost every inhabited star system, and an organization as deprived of funds as the TSA cannot afford to outfit all their squads with top-of-the-line equipment. While focusing on fewer, better-equipped transports would be an option for the TSA, it would significantly slow their initial response time.

    To allow the Kharaa a head start is suicide, and not worth any starting bonus.

    Because the TSA is underfunded for their total mission. They are forced to constucted the equiptment on site. This is an old military pracitce.
    Dont think of the TSA like a modern military force. It takes them many months to travel around the galaxy, clearing ship after ship of alien infestation. This means that they do not have enough equiptment to complete missions several months in length unless they build equiptment on site.
    They are far more comparable to the revolutionary period army. Where it takes many months to travel from point A to point B. It is simply more feasible to just use what they have already there then to pack it with them.

    Very well put. Add to that the fact that phase technology is still highly experimental technology, and thus needs to keep down the mass of the phased object in order to keep the process stable during long-distance transportation (such as from a nearby troop carrier). Give the marine heavy armor, and he might arrive through the ip with heavy armor, but without legs. Even medpacks would be no use. This is also why you only get one reserve clip for your pistol and lmg.
    Same applies for the marines that start the game: Docking with the troop carrier (this is from where the reinforcements are phased in) would be reckless in case the infection spreads, so you have to send out a shuttlecraft instead. Given the low weight limits (and limited room) that such vessels have, you once again have to watch the mass.
