Upon recently researching some issues with my paycheck over the last few months, I learned the US Army now owes me like $2000. Sounds like a start to getting me a new computer there.....

They should've been paying me extra cash for the last yr or so cause I don't eat in the mess hall. They haven't been giving me the money for it, so they owe me.

Seeing as how I'm really illiterate when it comes to building computers, any suggestions as to what I should get?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My current one is 2 yrs old and needs to be put to pasture.

get a new 3d card like a GF4 ti 4400 or 4600
and your system will prolly run good again.
if you want to go for a full upgrade.
you should get a motherboard with Nvidia Nforce chips on it

I recently got myself a new system.
Some observations:

- If GeForce, take the Ti 4200. It can easily be overclocked to the performance of a 4600, but costs half as much (And if you're not into overclocking, it still serves almost the same framerates as its big bretheren.).

- CPUs are starting to get ridiculously fast. Which game can possibly use a full 2,5 Ghz? Not even U2 will require that much. It's therefore adviseable to use the second grade, the CPUs between 1600 and 2000 Ghz - they're less costly, but still offer great speeds.

- RAM... The prices are still down. 512 MB DDR can easily be afforded.

- OS: I'm using Win2K, which works like a dream. XP could be good too, but I fear the spyware (Yea, yea, I'm a paranoic hypocrit, so what?). Keep your fingers away from ME or 9x, it simply won't be supported for much longer.

My god, I agree with everything NemesisZero said... let me just elaborate a bit:

- Athlon XP 1800+ <--My processor of choice
- ASUS GF4 Ti4200 <--I like ASUS a lot.
- ASUS A7V333 MoBo <--I like this better than the MSI one
- 512MB+ 333MHz DDR RAM <--Make SURE you get 333MHz, not 266

And personally, I like Win2K for my OS. It is the best Windows OS I have ever used. I like it best out of 98/ME/2K/XP

Thanx for the advice guys. I now have a bit more cash to work with as well now. For making the decision to stay in the Army for another 4 yrs, I'm getting a $20,000 bonus. So now I can buy a super computer. Is my choice of utilizing Alienware for one a good idea??

Then I would suggest a cable/dsl or even T1 connection (unless you already have one). Or a GeForce Ti 4400, 512MB ram, and a nice meaty 2.x GHz processor

Or make yourself a nice day:

Go into the next freak-PC store (you know, one of those where even I can point at the employees and scream "Geek"), walk up to one guy, and say "Hi, I've got about $10.000 at my disposal and want the best gaming machine you can imagine."
Then watch his face

NO! Stay away from Alienware. Their PC's are WAY overinflated. They look pretty, sure. But you can get the same performance for a lot less.

Nemesis Zero has the right idea. Find a small independent comuter retailer, and ask what he recommends. It also couldn't hurt you to SAVE some of that money, too.

Once again, the help is much appreciated. As far as my internet conection goes, I already have a cable one. Well, I do for another few months. I gotta get rid of it come December cause I'm leaving the confines of Texas for Germany.

Wait a month before you do anything. With any luck, AMD will be introducing a new processor set, so prices on the existing stuff will plummet. Get a:

Athlon XP 2000
Shuttle AK32 Motherboard
512 DDR Ram
GeForce4 4400 (You can clock it up later)
A good Case

That would own!

It's probably a pentium III, gunslinger. Because that heatsink sounds like a Gold Orb, and those really only fit pentiums.
