Constellation And Steam

<div class="IPBDescription">What do you want us to do?</div> This is an open query to any of the devs or pts about what exactly Constellation members should do with regard to Steam.

Obviously our WONids are becoming obsolete, so what does Flayra want us to do? A special e-mail perhaps? PMs? I'd just like to know so I know what to do when I have my new Steam ID.

This could also be used by the Veterans to ask as well. Unless they already have the answer in their funky hidden forum <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I spoke with Flayra about it via email - he's moved out of his place and has been without Internet access for the last week or so. He said he's not really sure exactly how Constellation will be affected by the move from WON to Steam, but if it does "break," they'll do everything they can to fix it. He's going to test things out once it releases later today. If there's anything he needs members to do - resubmit their information or something - he'll let you know.

    Can't anyone just shoot the STEAM developers in their head? Yes I know that would delay HL2, but who cares as D3 is coming out anyway... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ...

    Steam is good, much better than the current ingame server browser.

    We will still be using won for another week atleast also.

    I would like to point everybody to this news post from Sven Co-op. It outlines what donors will have to do, which is like what all the Constellation members would have to do...

    <!--QuoteBegin--From the Sven Co-op Site+--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (From the Sven Co-op Site)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
    <b>Important message for donors:</b> As you may have heard, Valve will soon be replacing Half-Life's WON ID system with Steam IDs. Players will be assigned a Steam ID when they first log in to Steam (Half-Life will be integrated into Steam when the next Half-Life update is released... you'll be able to get a Steam ID before then by downloading the commercial Steam installer when it's released on Wednesday, and creating an account).

    This will mean the WON IDs that we've collected will be rendered useless... we'll need to contact all existing donors to check their Steam IDs. Don't start contacting me about it yet, though, thanks... any current Steam IDs will be wiped once Steam leaves beta, anyway. Just keep watching the Sven Co-op site for further information. Once the new version of Steam is online and everything is sorted out on our end, I'll post instructions.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    So Flayra will have to wait unitll Steam is fully out, then get Steam ID's much like the WON ID's method. Hope this clears it up for all the Constellation members...

    Is it possible to contact Gabe and the steam development team personally? We all know they are quite busy already but I'm sure there is some geek at Valve with a side job that can do a Steam equivalent to the constellation.?

    its a hassle to get it updated so i suggest dlin the update from fileplanet (not sure about any other mirrors) and dl the 1.1.2.0 and cs 1.6 manually and its a easy to use exec and sorts and helps updating a lot easier. after updated steam pretty cool and i like it but only bad thing it takes forver to load but hey there will be updates..

    I don't like Steam, i tried even the firs beta time ago when i was a betatester.

    You can find a Steam version without CS if you search around.

    My first impression was that it was an unusable piece of crap, but now that I think that once most of the HL population has the caches that they need, it'll get better. In the long run, it's a good thing. I do hope NS is officially supported in the near future.

    the main problem with steam is that it discriminates against 56k and isdn users, because of the large bandwidth it requires to work effectively. Think about all the poor 56kers who are gonna be screwed over by steam <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The future is now...I suppose.

    It would have been much better if they just left WON on for Hl1 and mods, but Hl2 would need steam to work.

    problems with steam will work themselves out, and 56kers will have to download less after the initial download (as its only small updates). And anyway a lot of people have upgraded to broadband now, infact I only know one person with 56k and he doesn't play online games.

    Awww...thanks for caring <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> . I have the Steam/CS bundle from FilePlanet, it works fine for me, I'm getting pings of <200.

    I'd have to say, I got it from FilePlanet, I've had NO problems at all (except for the NSing, I'm gonna leave that up to the NS dev team). I had the Steam from steampowered.com and was pulling my hair out!

    I stayed up 'til midnight getting the updates, only to find the next morning the steam.exe self-deleted. Someone else had that problem on the steampowered.com forums, so I suggest you chaps either get it from FilePlanet, or be careful.

    Do you really think Gabe or any one at valve give 2 ***** about the names on that petition?

    Online petitions are about as usefull as 1 ply toilet paper.

    Alot of people forget that the WWW is international and freedom of speech doesn't mean too much when your not a citizen of the country where the choices are made. This isn't Sweeden and you can't vote no to this "Euro".

    Valve will do what ever it wants and no amount of bitching will change a thing.

    Also, why do you people in general always try to contact GABE.... ARE YOU BRAINLESS? Hes the man incharge, hes got teams of people to deal with the low end matters. He has a billion dollar company to run and you contacting him is pointless.. he'll never read it. He must get 2000 emails a day and he most likely doesn't even look at that email account.

    Bottom Line ____________
    Steam is here to stay and no amount of ******** is going to change anything!

    What makes it *really* hilarious is that this is from the same people who gave you unlag code and streamlined the communication protocol of Half-life so that it would use extremely little bandwidth. (I remember them saying a shotgun shot went from using over 100 bytes to 3 bytes.)

    Just throwing my 2 cents in here to bring us back on topic.

    I run 2, 30 player servers over at www.BattlefortheGalaxy.com and when I attempted to update both of them to Steam here's what I got:

    Checking bootstrapper version...
    Updating Installation...
    Unknown game 'NS'

    I got the same error whether I tried NS or ns.

    So what this tells me is that NS currently is not supported by Steam. If I'm correct, that means the NS team has about 7-10 days (I don't remember what the hard deadline is for turning off the WonID system) to get their mod supported by Steam. If Valve turns off the WonID system before Steam supports NS, then NO ONE on the planet will be able to play on a NS server via the internet.

    Just bringing this to everyone's attetion so we can get it addressed before alot of players realize they can't play NS anymore.
