I really don't understand Steam... Is it a good or a bad thing? Plus what does it do? All I know is that it gives you a desktop thing in HL where you can play mods and have a buddy list?

Does it download patches automatically or something? Even if you don't want the patch? How will it effect NS, if at all?

Thanks

Steam is the new backend that VALVe created for games. Basically, it lets you play games, purchase new games or content, automatically patch games (It can be turned off for certain things), download new media (videos, trailers...), find servers, and maintain a buddy list. It's a very good idea, and the program is shaping up well.

Don't worry, everything will work fine with Steam.

Steam is a very useful feature, incorperating a out-of-game server check, and auto-updater for VALVe games.

Soon, WON will be dropped by VALVe for steam, so that every paying customer will be required in the next version of Half-Life to incorperate Steam, which was thought to be in the version AFTER the next, but will probably be the next soon one.

This will be good, because if a person is banned from many a server by a actual server admin for cheating(AMX and adminmod are currently incorperating something so that when you ban, it lets you have a reason), that VAC will mark them as a "Possible-Cheater", and it'll watch them more carfully than those who are not marked, when a server has VAC activated.

I personally love the idea of migrating to steam, but hey, thats just me.

But if you're on 56K then you can count on downloading for hours before you can play anything again...

Quite funny how when Steam was first announced it was to be completely optional, and for broadband users only due to the massive amount of downloading needed. And now, its required even for modem users...

eek. the watching of ppl banned from servers makes me nervous. what if you get banned just because a server admin doesn't like you? then you'll get watched more closely and possibly get a global ban when you don't cheat? it's like getting a criminal record for a crime you didn't commit

A record is a good thing. Server ops should know your history. I like the idea of steam very much.

Also keep in mind that I saw more cheaters on Steam than I've ever seen on public servers, so in all odds cheating will get worse.

Not to mention the fact that no mods will work with Steam right off the bat, so be ready to not be able to play anything but CS & DOD...

Actually DOOM, I've heard of plans of them to talk with many major mod teams, so that they can colaberate so it'll all work together.

And all this probably isn't going to happen till after HL2 anyway, in which I'm willing to guess the NS community will suddenly go WAY down in population.

And Disco, I never said that VAC would ban you. It just watches you more closely. The new version of VAC being released with the new version of steam actually watches the C++ lines running through your computer, -supposedly-. Sounds like its gonna be great.

Where'd you hear that? Sounds like a debugger; it'd bulk up the executable greatly to include debugging info in...

10th october I'm going on an Americain Exchange Programe for 10-14days ish.

I miss soo much HL2, thers no way ill finish it int he time because of my 5 highers.

Still steam seemed good bar the huge loading time for me.

Still VAC banned me for using HLamp so I had to change CD key....
