Classical Music

Favourite Composers and Pieces.
I was just wondering if there was anyone else on the Natural Selection forums who likes Classical Music, and if they did, which composers and pieces do they like.

This may be a good way of openings up to different periods and learning about composers you had never even heard of before.

Personally I like the Handel, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Holst, and Mozart to name a few. However, my favourites have to be Elgar and Dvorak.

My favourite pieces are Elgar's Nimrod (Enigma Varation IX) and Dvorak's Largo from the New World Symphony (the music from the old Hovis adverts for any Brits out there, the ones where the Yorkshire lad is pushing his bike up the hill - "'ee by gum".)

Recently I was trying to track down the theme from THe New Statesman, when I discovered that it came from a piece by Mussorgsky (a composer I have never heard of) called Promenade, and if his other works are as good as this one then I shall be very happy indeed.

So, anyone else?

I tend to prefer the 'newer stuff' to the older, more rigid (possibly 'stuffy') classical music...
I like mostly twentieth century composers, Mahler, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Debussy ...
my favourite 'classical' piece is probably still the Rite of Spring, although i just bought Clair de Lune so im listening to that a fair bit lately.
if you like Mussorgsky get night on bare mountain (bear mountain?? ) its quite famous, and was even in one level of earthworm jim ;D
*edit, haha.. beaten to it /edit*

I don't know what it is, it just sounds like an American composer.

Also sounds like that advert with the flying pigs for that investment firm, who's name I forget (Zurich I think) you might have luck searching for that.

PS. Good show on watching Red Dwarf.

I've got to admit, I definitely like a lot of Klaus Badelt's work. He's done the scores to movies such as The Recruit, K19, Time Machine, and, most importantly, Pirates of the Carribean.

The Pirates score is what's been in my car's cd player for the past few days, and I'm still not even close to sick of it.

I listen to everything, tho I've a fondness for Handel and generally anything choral.

Stabby - in case you ever check up, its library music afaik, and thus unavailable unless you've a pile of cash and know which company supplied it to the Beeb.

I love the "Hoe-Down", "Appalachian Spring" (featured in Lord of the Dance), and the last movement of "Firebird Suite" (oh hell yeah!).

    Tchaikovsky
"Violin Concerto in D". So beautiful. I love it.

    Beethoven
Almost everything, but EspeciallY his symphonies...this is where you hear perfection.

"St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain" was the title, I thought.

Moonlight Sonata = REBBBBEEEEECCCAAAA!!!!! Look at those monsters!

    And assorted resident evil stuff.

Whereas Pachelbel's Canon always makes me think of Evangelion, heh.

Allegretto from Beethoven's Symphony no. 7 is a good choice.

    Also another thing.

The Last Night of the Proms this week!

Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the free and all that.

Quite possibly the largest annual music concerts in the world, the best music played by the best orchestras. It doesn't get much better than the Proms, whether it be the Last Night or any other night.

    I urge everyone to listen.
