Would you consider a marine shooting an alien through a wall an exploit?

The Acid Rocket and Bile Bomb are supposed to go through walls. Not through walls like bullets do, but 'splashing' through walls. Like a rocket. If it exploded at your feet, it didn't hit you, but you still could fly back from the explosion.

What possible logic is there for a liquid flowing through the walls?

Drop it, they'll find some sort of inane logic to explain the bug.

It's fine, as long as it's not used in a buggish way ( like that thread that described someone biling things underground).

discussing this is ****.
I tested the "shooting trough walls exploit" with a test map to find out how far it can go.

->
A Fade (gorge, skulk) can shoot though 32 units thick walls sideways and 48 units thick ceelings upwards.
32 units is the size width/length of a Marine,Fade,Skulk, crounching onos!
48 units is like the arm height of a standing marine.
Most moving doors in NS are 4 or 8 units thick.

So you can make the following magic trick:
Build a small pipe/box with REALLY thin walls and place any crouching NS player in it.
Now shoot it straight from the outside through the player in it...
The projectile starts on the other side of the pipe/box never noticing the inside or the 2 thin walls.

really, its up to a server to make up its own rules. they should have them listed somewhere or its a **** server and i wouldnt play in it, wether u would is up to u .

Well, it's not really liquid, is it? I thought it was some kind of forcefulf exploding... Acids from their body. Which explodes. I mean, if you chucked a grenade at a wall, wouldn't you feel something on the other side?

[edit] gg mojo my head is exploded now I don't think that even made sense [/edit]

It kind..of...seeps into the wall. Considering water is really a sticky substance, whatever it sticks to must be flowed. Er...yeah.

The splash that goes through a vent isn't an exploit. Pushing yourself against the vent and shooting is an exploit. Dropplets of water can go through a grate, an orb of water shouldn't go through the grate without exploding.

Splash damage going through walls will be fixed in the new version, but I don't know what the story is with the having your projectiles start that far away from you...
• MercsDragonMercsDragon Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 6963Members
if they start inside of you they will hit you and explode. if they start where they are with people being able to put their bodies through walls a little it allows stuff like this

i'd consider it an exploit
why?
ns_hera
the glass hallway
get a fade and u can shoot through that wall taking out the marine resource node without much risk.. if any

making marine comebacks IMPOSSIBLE

I believe they made it so the rocket spawns a bit infront of you, so the fades dident run into their own rocket

Why not? It's Alien liquid.
It's also a five year old game engine. Highly tweaked of course, but still five years old.
I drool at the Source prospects!

There is logic!
The rocket is more dense than the wall, so like a rock trew into water, it gets past and the wall returns to his original shape.

The glass walkway is 20 feet outside your spawn.

Acid rocket is a hive 3 ability.

If there's a fade there, YOU'VE ALREADY LOST, AND YOU'RE JUST DRAGGING OUT THE GAME

Water is liquid. Walls are not.

Shooting through walls is an exploit. Hitting things with splash damage isn't.

Yes, water is liquid, but water goes through gas, solid goes through water, and conceivably something denser than solid could pass through solid.

While its more likely to be a bug problem, it can still be explained by science, hahah.
• AhnteisAhnteis teh Bob Join Date: 2002-10-02 Member: 1405Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
no something denser then one solid could break that solid.

Unless we're talking about a very SLOOOOWWWW passing through. (Glass for instance actually flows slooowwwly so that really old windows are slightly thicker on the bottom then the top.)

However, it's not density that makes things able to pass through other things. It's the state - solid, liquid, gas ( and plasma I suppose). Ice for example is LESS DENSE then water. However, ice is a solid and water is not.

Some scientific background is necessary to create *good* science fiction.

who cares about the logic?

it's well known that the HL engine has trouble with splash damage going through surfaces. it's in every HL mod, pretty much.

and if bilebombing/acid rocketing through a wall is an exploit, then so is firing your 'nades in a way that they'll do damage through a wall. this does happen and has been done intentionally. so either nerf 'em both or learn to live with the HL engine's take on splash damage.

I'm not sure they can fix this.

Isn't this along the same lines as marines being able to build through walls? One insident comes to mind (well 2 occurances of the same thing). On lost, the marine comm dropped either a cc and an ip or a phase gate behind the weldable door that leads to a res node near marine start, but close enough to the door itself for the marines to be able to build through the door.
• AhnteisAhnteis teh Bob Join Date: 2002-10-02 Member: 1405Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Typical - splash damage is just a part of the game.
Standing next to a wall and shooting out the other side of the wall (where you are impossible to hit because you are BEHIND THE WALL) is an exploit.
• NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
Water being a special case tho, since its solid form has more space in its structure than the liquid form.

Of course if the acid was really just a long monomolecular string, then it could go through walls etc before having to fight gravity.

Though tbh I'd have to think more on it.

Anyhow its unfortunate that the HL engine can't cope with it.

Thru Wall acid spamming is the alien couter to marines building behind welded doors.

Its an exploit. This shouldnt have to be discussed because its so freaking obvious.

For example,do you REALLY thin flay and CO intended for fades to be able to use deadly SOF(NOT 2.01) and acid rocket to hit marines without any fear of retaliation? This was done by a fade in origin....he kept hitting us through the freaking wall and we couldnt even SHOOT him.
• ArsoNArsoN Join Date: 2003-06-10 Member: 17177Members
As far as i know, the reason you can shoot acid rockets through the hera walkway is because the actually projectile is formed a few inches infront of the fade. So if you get close enough, it forms on the ouside of the walkway. I haven't been able to bilebomb through it yet (although i've had very limited testing), maybe even grenades will go through aswell (if you're standing right up against the glass)?
