Don't like baseball? Don't post, nimrod
(Remember, this is a post for baseball fans - if you don't like baseball, I really don't give a ****, just don't post. All trolls will be dealt with harshly...)

Ok, so I grew up in a city called Waukegan about 60 miles north of Chicago on the Wisconsin border, and then spent 10 years living in Chicago. My family and I have been lifelong Cubs fans. I have watched every season since I was old enough to understand English, and lived through the highs and lows (mostly lows) of being a fan of 'the lovable losers'. Only a Red Socks fan can truly understand the pain of a Cubs bleacher bum. The losing seasons are only surpassed by the rare times that these teams reach the playoffs, only to be swept aside by inferior teams and their fair-weather fans. If you remember 1984's division playoffs against the Padres, or the 1989 first round elimination against the Giants, or the 1998 Wildcard debacle, or (if you are really old) the 1969 Cubs losing out to the Miracle Mets (I hate you, Mets fans. Yes, you.). Boston fans feel that same pain of not having won a championship since the early 1900's, although they at least made it to a World Series in 1986 (only to lose to the $%#@% Mets on a Billy Buckner error - the EXACT SAME ERROR HE MADE AS A CUB TWO YEARS EARLIER TO COST US THE 1984 NL PENNANT!! ARGG!!!).

So, now you probably have followed the NL Central championship race this year, as the Cubs have battled the Astros and (filthy, disgusting, hated) Cards, and are now poised to claw their way back into undisputed first place. After sweeping the Brewers at home, and taking the Cards 4 out of 5 in the best series I have ever seen in my life (yeah, SUCK IT, La Roussa, you sack of dirt!!!), they move on face Montreal. Meanwhile the Red Socks have pulled within a game and a half of the Yankees. The Yankees... you just have to hate them.

Could this be the year? When will they pull out the rug from under me? Will the Red Socks face the Cubs in a world series rematch of 1918 (the last time Boston won a title)? What have I done to deserve this? AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

PS: Did you know that the Cubs/Cards rivalry is the oldest one in US professional sports? It dates back to 1876 when they first faced off. Did you also know that the Cards suck my ponce, and all St. Louis fans should be deported back to communist Russia where they came from? It's a fact!

I would like to take this time to make a formal, public apology. The first time I logged onto IRC was because I figured I'd need to as a brand-new NS playtester. I joined #natualselection, feeling somewhat lost, and found myself in the middle of a discussion about sports. Not knowing MonsE was a baseball fan, one of my first comments was "Baseball is for people who don't like soccer." [edit]Scratch that. Looking at my logs, the exact quote of it was:

I'm pretty sure that's the only time MonsE has kicked me out of a channel, and if you asked me it was perfectly fair. I think MonsE deserves a long-overdue apology from me for not acting my age.

Back on topic: from what little I've learned about baseball since that brash comment of mine referred to above, I think it's about darn time the Cubs get another shot at the world series. Can't say I'm rooting for anyone else, (haven't supported the local Florida Marlins since I got royally sick of hearing the "everyone's doin' the fish" cheer) so why not root for the Cubs?

One nice thing about being a Cubs fan is, you're always surrounded by other Cubs fans no matter where you live in the US. Due to WGN Superstation being part of every basic cable package since the 1970's, they have always been a team people could see when they had no team to root for geographically. So you at least get plenty of shoulders to cry on...

I do like how Steinbreener is going back to his Billy Martin days right now though. Plenty of hatred and discontent over there, and long overdue. If you guys fold up to the Red Socks after having the largest starting game winning margin in Yankees history this year, I am going to do a happy dance.

If you ask me, a Dodger fan, everyone deserves to win except the San Francisco Giants.

    Go Cubs !
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
That is an excellent point. I am quite anti-Giants, with Barry Bonds lousy attitude, their easy division, and especially their wussy fair-weather fans, eating sushi at a GOD**** BASEBALL PARK!.

Plus I have pretty mad respect for the Dodgers and their Brooklyn roots, as well as one of my best baseball memories was watching Kirk Gibson hit the most amazing game winning World Series homerun in human history...

I remember about 8 or so years ago, the Dodgers had a wonderful team. I've forgotten alot of their names by now. But Brett Butler, Eric Karros, Mike Piazaa (Before he became a moron) and Hideo Nomo.

Damn. And there were more good players too.

I have to agree. Over the past 3 games the Brewers broke all their season attendence records: because most of the fans in the park were Cubs fans that drove up from Illinois

I like the Brewers back when they had Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and ...all those other people I forget now. Nowadays I don't really get around to watching much baseball.

If only they didn't suck so much....so utterly...utterly much. Hell, the Brewers could take 9 people off the streets and they'd win more...pffft.

Go...someone; anyone but Atlanta, San Fran or New York (either)

Sure thing. How much do you know about cricket? There are some similarities.

The basics of baseball are pretty simple: You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball (ok, that was an inside movie line joke).

Two teams take turns on offense and defense. When you are on offense, you are the batter. You are trying to hit the ball so that the opposing team cannot catch it in the air. You are also trying to race to 'bases', which there are 4 of in a baseball field (called a diamond). If you can hit the ball and beat it to the nearest base by running, you are safe. The next fellow then tries to do the same. If you can run all the way around the diamond to the home base where you started, you score a 'run' (a point). If you hit the ball out of the park, you get a free run around the bases (a home run - very similar to cricket so far, right?).

On the defensive side, there are 9 players. Their job is to get three of the offensive team players out by catching the ball in midair, tagging a player with the ball as he is running between bases, throw the ball to a base before a player gets there, or strike a player out. The pitcher throws the ball at the batter trying to strike him out (by making him swing and miss 3 times). He has to throw in a very small area over the home base, and if it's outside that area and the batter doesn't swing 4 times, he gets 'walked' (which is a free base), and the cycle repeats itself. The ball is not bounced in like Cricket; the pitcher throws it in the air, typically very hard (around 90-98 miles per hour, or 158KM/hr), and he makes the ball curve various ways as well by using the seams on the fabric of the ball. The batter uses a bat that is a narrow cylinder, not like a big cricket 'paddle' bat, so the area of actually making contact with the ball is about the size of a penny. Very hard to do.

That's the very very basics of it (there are a LOT of rules). There is no timelimit, but each team gets 9 chances on offense and nine chances on defense (called 'innings'). If there is a tie at 9 innings, they keep playing 1 inning at a time, and if one team is ahead at the end of that extra inning, they win.

Not sure if this makes the slightest bit of sense. It's easier if you have cable or satelite and watch ESPN broadcast games
