Some tips have been questions (see replies), but the majority of tips are a great help, esp. diabling messenger in XP (grr...) and some helpful commands in the HL console.

This is the part that made me shut that window and shake my head in disgust:

    Disabling Virtual Memory
After extensive tests, I can reccommend Disabling virtual memory on systems with 512mb of RAM or more. It eliminates Hard drive reads en masse' and thus increases performance since RAM access is much faster than Virtual Paging.

    Right Click My Computer
    Click Properties
    Select Advanced Tab
    Under Performance Select Settings
    Select Advanced Tab
    Under virtual Memory Select Change
    Select "No Paging File"
    Click Set
    Click Ok
    Restart.

XP takes 130-180mb of RAM to load depending on the services you have on. Also note that certain graphics programs, such as 3d studio max and Adobe photoshop will require Virtual paging enabled.

I dun understand why thats a problem, because its quite true.

MonsE's guide, I went through it, did everything I could, and man, performance went up 20-30% at least. I can actually run Q3 games now, instead of just crashing with them.

To make it simple...disabling virtual memory is a very...very silly thing to do...

Also when I played DoD (before 1.0) I read this thread just as 1.0 was out and thought "Yep, onto greener pastures"

Another excellent guide. Both guides are collaborative.

As for disabling virtual memory, there have been debates on both sides (there is no winner, since it is dependent on the person's system).
One questionable tip does not render the entire guide (or "window") void.

I put my faith in MonsE. He does this for a living.

I have to say the 'no pagefile' is a VERY risky thing to do. You can get a very very unstable system that way, or even one that won't boot. I would have recommended that you have at least 1GB of RAM, but I'm conservative like that. I don't post that one in the guide because it just makes so many apps freak way out. Very much 'do at your own risk'...

I've used MonsE's recommadations from that article on my new computer and they've helped. Don't know how much, but they have helped. Not touching the registry in a long shot however.

Less risky solution for people with lots of RAM: put your pagefile on a RAMDrive.

I think I'm just going to reformat and reinstall everything on my computer. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

OMG MonsE has hit my bro on the head with a whale on thsi one.He keeps installing files and cofiguring through pressing 'next next next' and next thing you know,he gets BSODs....a LOT of BSODs....

Sadly he is an annoying ******* so I wouldn't care if his PC mutated into a giant mechanical freak monster that will chew on his testicles anyday <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
