Why you can't connect
If you own a BEFSR41 v2.1 or lesser Linksys firewall cable/dsl router with firmware version 1.45.6 and cannot connect to games here is the solution:

Goto the linksys ftp site and get the file named "befsr-fw-[any number < 1456].zip" and run it to flash (downgrade) your firmware. Your internet games should now work.

Is there a recommended firmware version to get? I have version 1.44.2 (December 13, 2002) and I am still having players getting disconnected. I have everything set up correctly too (I think). I have:

Block WAN Requests, DHCP, logging, and security disabled
ports 27015, 27005-27010, 6002, 7003 all open to UDP and TCP on the server computer.
DMZ host is set to 192.168.1.254 (someone said it was good to do this).

I had my ports forwarded... all this other stuff set up too. get the 143 firmware, and turn all those extra changes off, mine works that way. (and considering we have the same router, your's should too)

remember to unplug all connections to your router exept the computer that is updating it, corruption may occure if this is not done. Read some FAQs and stuff before you go messing around too much either, don't want to mess up your router or anything.

    goodluck.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think I'll ever buy another linksys router after the trouble I've had with HL and BEFSR41.

After I posted here, I figured I'd test out all the versions they had on the FTP and 1.43.3 is the only version that seemed to work.

Just out of curiosity, I've been thinking of buying a new router because, for me, the problem of running a game server is existent in every game, not just Half-Life. I was wondering which router seems to work best for running a game server? Is LinkSys the only router that causes a problem?

Hmm, that's all very odd... I own a Linksys BEFSR41 myself, and it's always worked fine with HL and NS etc, out-of-the-box, and with some of the more recent firmware updates. I've had a few problems before, mainly with Steam... and they've all turned out to be unrelated to the router.

The only problem I can think of is when trying to have more than one PC gaming at once; I think you have to specify a different port for HL to use on each PC, although I'm afraid I don't remember the command.

UPDATE: Oh yeah, and for running a server, you should just have to set up port forwarding as jabs said above. Or port triggering. Best try each to see which works! If it doesn't work through the router, trying connecting directly and see if it works... if it does then, yes, it's the routers fault, but if not, you might want to check if they're a software firewall getting in the way, or even if maybe your ISP has the ports blocked downdtream.

Slayer, just for the record, what version of firmware does your router have? You may have gotten lucky and bought the router at the time the working version was released. My router's manual actually says that I cannot run a half-life server (look below!!). It is a rather old version of the router, straight from the box; I think it is about 3.5 years old.

See, I never tried running a server, I'm afraid... I was mainly replying to the previous messages, I added the server bit afterwards :/ However, there was nothing in the manual regarding HL servers not working, if that's any help.

What HAS worked, has worked regardless of firmware version... I've tried a few.

Are you using static IP address behind the router, by the way, or DHCP? And have you contacted the Linksys support staff, they may well be able to help?

I managed to get this working with the build listed above, so it isnt a problem for me. I was just curious is all

And i must correct myself in the previous post where I said the manual said the problem wouldn't be addressed in the future (heh I'll just quote it for fun ). It says:

"Just forward the port to 27015 to the local IP of the server PC. There remains, however, a problem with people being booted after a few minutes with an "illegible server" message."

    Oh well......
