The ones complaining about bandwith and disk space used by steam should read the planned changelog for the final version:
    (...)
<i>- Vastly more efficient use of disk space and bandwidth in Steam.</i>
    (...)

And full skin support... Hehe... it would be nice to see a ns based skin theme...

the steam site appears down because it's getting hammered to hell...

Steam does download the normal way, just click on a game on the game menu and it downloads.

    Ahh thankyou.

Signed up now, but it didnt ask for my CDKEY which makes me wonder.

The file was 584kb tho, not 590.

Curses and now just when it said it was registering me it appears to have packed itself in....

Okay I dl and installed it, it asked me for a lot of things but not my cdkey. Then when I had given my email and password it said it was registering me.

It then froze. I shut it down, restarted. Now its claims to be a 3% updated, and has stayed their for the past 3 min. Is this normal?

    Its says

    steam - updating - 3%

    Updating steam platform files.

    Just to clear this up:

If you have an existing version of HL already installed on your computer, Steam can simply sidle up to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Valve/Half-Life/Settings/ and simply copy the value in the Key string.

It won't ask for your CD key.

    Have a nice steamy day <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

My steam is updating for a second time after it crashed. Why does it need to re-update? God, Beta 2.0 was more stable than this. AND I lost my uber leet steamid, which pisses me off.
