grid.org and SETI@Home
Does anyone here use United Devices "Fight against Cancer" or SETI@HOME? These programs run in the background (never interfereing with programs) and utilizes unused computer cycles in computations that would otherwise be too unwieldley to even the fastest of supercomputers. Millions of users download 'work units' and send them back when finished, racking up points and rankings. So a kind of competition between members, teams, and countries spring up on who could do the most service. United Devices attempts to match molecules in search for cures of cancer, anthrax, smallpox, and a variety of deadly diseases. SETI@HOME, created by UC Berkeley, searches radio transmissions for possible signs of extra-terrestrial life. Both are good causes (though one be more 'unorthodox' than the other).
If there's enough interest, the NS community can create a team for United Devices in friendly competition for a good goal. This post was inspired by DOD forum's simlilar efforts, and they are very successful.

So check it out at www.grid.org.

And check out www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu to find those Kharra.

And here's the link to the DOD forum where it was suggested, also contains additional info.
