<div class="IPBDescription">Writen while others sleep (part 2 of 7)</div> "It could be quite a while before I can get the electricity systems routed back to lighting guys, so get moving. Fast and quiet." Richards was droning into our ear pieces. We had been going pretty much due east in the pitch black for 3 or so minutes. The dull metallic clank of our boots was becoming a back ground noise. Then we all squinted. A lot.
"Ah... easier than I thought." Richards was ovbiously well briefed in commanding and grid network technics, most of which worked through a central command console. I remember seeing a practice module back in training, as it was part of the advanced class. Most of the clever guys got entered and I was glad I hadn't. All I knew about it was that it involved sitting down for a long amount of time. I wasn't in the TSA for that.
The light revealed more than we wanted to know. We all readied our rifles, but before even Gen could pull the trigger, Farsons cut in. Typical, just when things are getting fun.
"DON'T!" His arm outstreched across our line of fire.
"Don't you LISTEN?" He started. Everyone relaxed a little, already tired of his preachings.
"If you shoot this..." He paused a second to check he was right, "Defensive chamber, then they'll all come running!" I was paying more attention to the gelatinous structure that we were about to shred to nothing. It was obviously organic. It looked like a... well... blob of jelly. Five large leafs protruded from the top of the blob (a central support perhaps) and they waved rythmically. Fats and acids were running up and down the sides of the structures walls. It was certainly alive, but I also felt it was more than a plant. It had a sense of conciousness.
"Lets keep moving." I said. Then our next way point turned up on our HUD vision.
"We have to climb over that thing?" Gen started. Our way point was about 30 metres away, and lead down the corridor which was blocked by the defense chamber.
"Just keep moving soldiers." Richards reminded us he was only a few metres above us.
"It should be fine," Farsons began, "Should be."
I went first. The whole structure shuddered as I putt my boot square onto the centre of the mass. It was about waist high. "Get a move on then!" Farsons said behind me.
It provided quite stable as we hiked over it, but none of us knew if it had set alarm bells ringing. Surely it would have, and if not it, then the lights all turning on at once, must have set some sirens off in our attackers cerebelliums.
Simultaneously we breathed a sigh of relief as Farsons made it over. He was the last in our squad, and as much as we got annoyed at times, he provided peace of mind.
"Wait!" His voice had dropped to a whisper. We all followed suit.
Then we heard some clicking. A very fast clicking, and it was getting louder. All of us didn't hear it, and he did. While he was hiking a glob of alien matter. We would have been in awe of him, but we didn't have the time for it.
"6 o'clock!" shouted Richards. And my mind dropped into bullet time. I remember turning, and everything going dark, except for the muzzle flashes from our guns. And a dog like thing was haring down across the polished metal plateau, going straight for me. His eyes red like the fires of hell, his teeth were dripping with saliva and they were only made less significant by his huge front and back legs, which were foot long spikes.
Fear has a new name. And then it hit my chest.
And I was nothing against the weight of the alien attack.
