Disk Defragmenter

grrrrr n' pffft
The computer upstairs hasn't been defragmented in uhh, like 468 days (and not error checked in around 1688, so it says, but that's impossible, since I haven't had it that long). The problem is, there's a program running that I'm not aware of.

Defragmenter is interupted constantly and it's impossible to defragment; as is file/error checker.

The computers basic specs are:
Windows 98
Pentium 3 ~500Mhz
384MB RAM
8MB ATI RAGE PRO Turbo graphics card (irrelevant, I'd assume)

17.9GB Hard Drive
3.62GB Free (Since it can only fully defragment when 15% or more of the hard disk is empty)

Nothing but Explorer running (which is required)
Task Scheduler paused (tried with it unpaused too)
Cable Modem turned off (tried with on too, )
Screen Saver turned off
Monitor turned off (once it's started)

However, something is still interupting (writing to the HD ) it, I have no idea wth it could be...at all. I control+alt+delete-ed every single program possible. What could possibly be interupting it? Is there a DD download I could replace my current one with, or does it not work correctly on Windows 98, or am I just screwed? Am I missing some important defragmenting side note? The one on this computer works fine (when I'm surfing the internet and listening to music while it does it!).

Have you tried booting it up in safe mode and running it? That means no apps will be loaded from startup or the registry run key. Also be sure to turn off your antivirus software.

Got it to work finally. It's at 55% or so (that's until I go upstairs, see that it's spontaneously restarted and beat it down like that copier in office space...with more explosions).

    Thanks for the help.

I used to use Adaware 6 to find out what was running
in the background of WIndows 98. As all Win98 users
will know CTRL+ALT+DEL does not show you much.
So use AAW 6 to do its normal scan, then save the log file.
In the log file it tells you what processes were running.
I think 9 was the mimimun I could get it down to.
