Discreet (makers of 3dsmax) offers GMax for free, but I believe it unfortunately does not have 3dsmax's rendering capabilities. It's more for creating models, not for displaying them.

There's good old Half-Life Model viewer, only problem is you have to stick with all the prerendered poses... Didnt Brazil Renderer have the ability to pose?
