Bittorrent Question

There's an upload speed too?
I'm a new user to Bit Torrent. So I'm downloading something, but then there's a download speed (understandable) and an upload speed. What's the upload speed? What am I uploading? Is anyone downloading from MY computer also? And what IS the average velocity of a laden N. African swallow?
Answers appreciated. Thanks!

That's how bit torrent works.. One seed uploads to whoever connects to it, and those connectors in turn upload to other to in effect turn all downloaders into "helper uploaders" to distribute the file faster.

You're uploading the file to others.

Great, now there's this error "Problem connecting to tracker...operation timed out".
Well, the thing's still downloading. Is the error a bad thing?

And thanx for teh answer, clears some things up. But what is a seed? (Each computer right?)

EDIT: Finally found a decent BT FAQ. thanx though.

The person that is hosting the bit torrent download is usually referred to as the seed. Its a pretty accurate term because they really just get the whole process started and from that point on it runs on its own. The way the bit torrent protocol works is that the file is broken up into pieces that the clients download individually. When you start downloading the file the tracker lists you as one of the peers to download pieces from. Once you have a single piece of the file completed then other people can start downloading from you. The pieces are put in their proper place in the file as they are completed. Once every piece has been downloaded by at least one person the seed isn't as necessary since people from that point on can just download from eachother. When people leave the download window open to let others download from them it also can be referred to as 'seeding'.

The problem connecting to the tracker error isn't too much of a problem unless it occurs when you are first starting the download. Once you have a list of peers to download from you don't need to contact the tracker to continue downloading from them. It just means that you won't be able to find any new peers until you can contact the tracker again which may make your download slower.

Uh, that's a good one. Did you just leave it running, or did you ever resume the download?
