"it Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer."

Gee, that's swell...
Since I'm only on a 64K connection, I'll have to leave the computer on to download NS 2.0 when it comes out next Thursday. I'm hoping that it'll be released before I set off for work in the morning (I live in the UK). Now, my download manager can pretty much take care of everything - it can reconnect, hang up and shut down the computer after it's finished the download. However, my computer goes onto that stupid "It is now safe to turn off your computer..." screen and stays there instead of just quitting Windows and turning off.

I don't want to leave my computer running unattended any longer than I have to. Is there any way to alter this?

I believe this is a motherboard feature.

To shut down without getting that screen you need a mobo for an Intel processor.

EDIT: You know, I couldn't sleep came over here, answered this question, realised my clock was wrong, and am now heading back to bed. That's. F****ng. Sad.

My AMD- based board shuts down w/o that screen, check your bios.

Is there any particualr reason you don't want to leave your computer unattended? If you're worried about privacy you can get desktop locking utilities (I have 3 siblings and i'm the only one with a computer...I need someway to keep the little rapscallions out) And a computer can run quite happily without being turned off..when I actually have a stable OS i leave my machine on for days at a time...

It's an AMD for what it's worth.

Damn. I know very little about BIOS. Could you be a little more specific?

I don't like to leave my computer on because that's the time most of my comps die. I'd much rather it to be off than potentially over-heating.

I appreciate the feedback so far, guys.

I'm no expert but I don't think the computer will overheat if it isn't doing anything except displaying that message.

If it helps you to know at all, I built my own comp, and I haven't had to restart or turn it off for three months, and its doing fine, I monitor the temperature inside it with a simple asus-built program.

That's very unlikely. NS was released around 8pm GMT last time (I think, I can't remember fully). Say you leave for work at 9am. That's 4am EST. Won't draw much of a crowd for release at that time, especially seing as the rest of the US is behind that. I'm afraid that you'll have to wait until you get home.

Well, lets see, I take it you didn't build your own PC, so what's the make and model of it?

I had this same problem after installing Service Pack 1.
I THINK I found a way around it:
    GO to CONTROL PANEL
    Go to POWER MANAGEMENT/POWER OPTIONS
There's an option in there for Advanced Power Management.
    (It's under the APM tab)
Enable it, and shut down your PC. Any luck?

I don't see why you can't keep ur computer on

My computer is constantly on, infact looking at it this computer hasn't been switched off in months, its been restarted once every couple of weeks, but it hasn't been shut down for ages. As long as you don't have some cheep crappy motherboard and PSU you're fine leaving it on!
