yea lol.. i forget what they taught me.. i forget what why they taught me it, but for sum reason i thought i took 8 digits for a single character/number
Hmmm maybe... I'm not sure... But <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/apparel/2826.shtml" target="_blank">here is an example of a 3-word binary sentence</a>. Also, <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/apparel/575e.shtml" target="_blank">here</a> is <a href="http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/apparel/575e.shtml" target="_blank">another cool shirt</a>.
This thread isn't really that off topic, and I'll tell you why . . . now stay with me here, when you play NS, you see aliens, right? Now stay with me, when you see aliens, do you get scared? Do you get scared enough to go insane? Considering this thread is about insanity, I think it is far more relevant than anyone is willing to admit. Someone just might become so frightened after being attacked by a <!--emo&:tiny:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tiny.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':tiny:'><!--endemo--> they go crazy and jump out of a window . . .
Oh well, if you put it into a translator, maybe you are right... <!--emo&:0--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'><!--endemo-->
Yep, 8 digits per character. That includes periods and spaces, so...
The reason is because a computer works in base-2 math, unlike our base-10 math. An electric circuit is either on, or off...there is no third state [yet...quantum computer should add a third state...and then a character can be represented with half as many digits], thus giving us the 0 and 1. We, on the other hand, can use 0 through 9. Heck, some ancient civilizations used base-14 math, inventing 4 new single-digit numbers.
Using just 8 digits in base-2 math, you can count from 0 to 255. Try it sometime...
00000000 00000001 00000010 00000011
And so on. It's just like our way of counting, but with only two numbers to work with. Good stuff.
So have I succeeded in sending this even further off topic, or does this count as insanity?

Where a calculator on the ENIAC is equpped with 18,000 vaccuum tubes and weighs 30 tons, computers in the future may have only 1,000 vaccuum tubes and perhaps weigh 1 1/2 tons. -- Popular Mechanics, March 1949
Actually, quantum matter should be able to introduce,, at least from reading Timeline, a total of 32 states, making crap so much more efficient it's not funny.
That's only theory, though, and as of yet, we can't read it that fast. Current working models are being built with, at last count, 6 atoms. At least I think it is 6...anyone know any different? My information is about two months old by now. And we can read Up, Down, and Weird [a state that is read as both Up and Down] from those atoms. Three states. And my guess is that in the next 20 years or so that we start seeing them used more and more, we probably won't see more than 3 states. Time Line is science fiction, and while it may have some basis in quantum mechanics, we are a long way from being able to accurately read 32 states from an atom.
Give it a hundred years or so, though...can you imagine the games out great-grandchildren will be playing?
