What Is My Problem?

hey i'm running a redhat 7.3 linux server on an 800 megahertz 256k ram old machine and i get less than mediocre pings when i have 6+ ppl playing.

now, i was thinking of upgrading the bugger to about 2 gigahertz, and at least 700 something kilos of ram.
but then i realized that my server is behind a router which is also connected to two computers that play halflife mods frequently, and sometimes at the same time.

so my question for you is: will upgrading help my players pings significantly or is my server just crappy because of its shared connection with many other computers (i have a cable connection going to the router).

any help would be appreciated,

bert.

NS eats a lot of cpu power.

Best is to wait till NS 2.0 it is posible that it will run with ur spec then.

Well an easy way to see if its because of CPU/MEM restrictions, type
    top -d 1
    then push shift + p
and it will list the processes in CPU usage order so just look at the HLDS process inside that ( probably near the top of the list now)

I really hope you meant 256mB of RAM because 256kB is......how shall I say.....laughable...and probably impossible if you have a recent motherboard. Anyways, if you have a 800mhz processor running Linux from the console then your problem is probably the upload bandwidth for the cable modem. Although you get killer download with a cable modem, your upload is usually set to a ridicuously low number. Mine is less than 100kb (~15 kB/s) upload while I can hit over 2mbits download. Can't wait 'till I'm back to college where I can get 1mbit upload, even on a wireless connection in the commons.
