Need A Name Idea For A Map

alienchickenpiealienchickenpie Join Date: 2003-01-25 Member: 12710Members
NS_Push doesn't sound like a cool map, I need a cool name.
The map is a docking wing in a large research station that floats somewhere in a distant galaxy.
I tried, but I only got sucky names that sound like a disease.
Please help me.

Go into more detail please. What was this ship researching? What nationality are the owners? Is the ship brand spanking "elite", or is it an old piece of poo? If you answer my questions, I gander I could come up with something.

It's a pretty new vessel, stationed in a newly discovered solar system, funded and manned by an international team. It's pretty luxurious and it was designed to simulate a normal research center on earth.
The station sends probes that collect samples like soil, gas and minor life-forms. The samples are gathered and sent to the research station. The research station analyzes the samples and preserves them. One day, a team of researchers found a pad of kharaa bacteria. It didn't look like a lifeform, so they packed it up as a soil sample (according to the regulations, minor life-forms should be cryogenically preserved and labeled "live sample"). The bacteria grew inside the crate, the 1 square inch sample filled the entire crate. When the inspector opened the crate, he saw a stinking, pulsating becteria mass. The most interesting feature was a semi-transperent pink "bag". The inspector poked the pink growth and it exploded. A skulk jumped out of the egg, he killed the inspector and everyone else in the docking bay.
That's a little too much detail but I felt like writing a little story..

hmm, perhaps I could suggest calling it ns_something that means world peace/unity. I was thinking about naming it after the russian space station, whose exact spelling escapes me the moment. It was pronounced mi-er, and mean peace in russian.
...
Something earthy, yes, it must be. Earth Science related, just named after earth things...something along those lines...just posting what I think so far. Might spark something in your mind.

It's funded by some fat corporations that want to colonize the planets or find some precious ore, for sheer profit. I don't think a name that means peace will be too good.

I thought about that but it will sound a bit like I ripped the idea from Hera.

The station was Mir. Which IIRC (a while since I did russian) means Star.

Raiding mythology is good, but roman/greek/egyptian has been done to death.

Try Viking, Celtic, or Germanic, or for further afield, Hindu, Babylonian, Persian, Indonesian.

theres a billion mythologies out there.. (A. C. Clarke called the object Rama in "rendevous with rama" under the assumption that astronomers would have run out of greek names by then...)

Alternatively, focus on irony. Your station was built for corporate greed? call it ns_charity...

You said that it was a ship on a new discovered system and financed by a company? hmm....

You could try something which matches with great explorer, like Capt. Cook or Columbus. Or maybe something relating to co-operations who only wants profit, ns_microsoft maybe (hehehe ).

Strange. It should be named after some sort of imfamous corporation with an interesting name, or a place that is a significant mining area. Or a number, if they are that cold and heartless.

1. This is a company that buys whole star-systems, sends probes to look for water, ore and possibly useful lifeforms and then sells them to mining companies or colonization companies.
2. This mining corporation used to ignore other unthreatening life forms and eventually destroy them. The corporation started exterminating the red space slugs that crawled all over the mining planet FGSA-1435-B, one of the only planets that has large quantities of pure diamonds. When the researchers found the last specimen, they saw something spectacular, the slug wriggled a little and then the red fluid oozed out of its body. The slug became harder and harder, eventually it looked and felt like a diamond. The research team took it to the station, the tests showed that the slug's remains were indeed a pure, flawless diamond. The mining company doesn't wanna take any risks anymore, so they take every life form they find and preform all sorts of tests to make sure they don't miss anything like that again.

Dude, that backstory really makes me thing they've got badass luck...poor ****. "Biting the hand that feeds you" to use a cliche.
...
Its got to mean forcefully careful, if I may make that suggestion for the ship name. They are only careful for money's sake, anyway.
• alienchickenpiealienchickenpie Join Date: 2003-01-25 Member: 12710Members
They don't REALLY have badass luck, they probe thousands of planets every day.

Why not something basic like Hannah or Romulous, maybe even Loki.. Maybe NS_Forthright? Another word for truthful since they smuggled an alien aboard. Err, wait that was an accident wasn't it?

edit: Eh, Galileo? I know I spelled it wrong, but his research had to do with planets ^.^ and so does theirs.

ns_chimera

Chimera: [ki-mir-a] n in Greek mythology, a fire-breathing she-monster made up of the parts of various animals; an impossible fancy; a living organism in which two separate kinds of tissue exist.

I think greek names/mythical creatures are a bit used. Unless, you want me to rant like the Sargeant in Red vs Blue. Beware, not perfect quotes.

Sgt: So, do you have anymore mythical creatures to call the vehicle? Otherwise, we will be sticking with, the Warthog.
Griff: No...No, I'm fine.
Sgt: You sure? Unicorn, Bigfoot, Sandsquash...
Simmons: Leprechan?
Griff: Hey, shut up man. He doesn't need any help...
Sgt: Hey, Simmons, what the name of that mexican lizard? Eats all the goats?
Simmons: Ah...the Chubacabra, sir.
Sgt: Hey, Griff. Chuba-thingy, how about it? I like it. Got a ring to it.

Karma, the Iroquios comes from your correspondence letters. The name of the ship that is infested, I believe.
