I found it on my HD
It's a folder called setup in...

C:/WINDOWS

It takes 1.5 Gigs of my HD.

It has a bunch of .dll files and when I open one of the setup information files, it says

[Version]
Signature = $Windows NT$
SetupOS = Microsoft® Windows ® 2000 Operating System
SetupPlatform = Workstation
SetupBuild = 2195

; Microsoft Fax

Since I don't run Win2K, can I rid my system of this folder?

Also, can I clean out this TEMP folder of the same root?

    Who knows? It's Windows. Maybe deleting it will do nothing, maybe it'll force you to reformat, and the kicker is that it'll do something different if you do it again!

    At least, that's my experience.

    It was probably put there by your computer manufactorer. Whether its safe to delete or not, I'd bet on sure, but of course anything that can go wrong will, so there's always a chance it is somethin :P

    Whenever i'm not sure about a file on my comp, I type
    it's name and extension (i.e opengl32.dll) into Google
    and that usually helps me find out what it is, why its there
    and if I can delete.
    Oh and, YES I DO know what opengl32.dll is there for. I
    simply typed it in as an example.

    You should leave it. It's the installation files. When you want to reinstall windows these files may be useful

    I +think+ these are the cab files from the windows cd. Stuff like drivers, all the windows applications and so on, they're there so you don't need to fetch the windows cd each time you install a new device.

    Well that's what i +THINK+ anyway.

    I would delete it.

    ...but then again, I like living in the edge.

    That's nothing that comes with a vanilla installation of XP (I am assuming you are running XP). It's likely a vendor-supplied piece as others have mentioned.

    If you want to find out if it's important, there are a couple things you can do:

    Use regedit to do a search for the paths 'c:\windows\setup' and '%systemroot%\setup' and see what crops up as using that directory. If everything looks pretty clean, you can rename that directory to something else, and use your PC for a few days and see if any apps start failing or complaining about missing files. Finally, if all looks good, you could delete it.

    That's my recommendation, at least.

    If you want to see if ur system runs alright without it, I suppose you could always rename the directory, reboot, and see what happens (be sure to have a boot disk/CD though, just in case!).
