Bittorrent Release

Please?
2.0 is going to be a huge release, rivaling that of DoD 1.0... Well, hopefully. Getting any kind of game file the day of is a massive pain. Lines, slow download speeds, and general not coolness.

This idea was brought up a couple months ago, but now that 2.0 has a release date, I'd figure I'd try to get a more definite answer. For those of you that don't know Bit Torrent is a file sharing system, totally legal, used to distribute bandwith consuming, high demand files. For information about how it works... click

I think this should be seriously considered by the NS team. Its fast, its free, and it'll make opening day run a whole lost smoother.

I must have made this link a favourite by accident a long time ago. With Bittorrent, Kazaa and direct downloading getting your hands on 2.0 shouldn't be a problem.

if possible bittorrent has to be the most sensible and best way to distribute this. but you all gotta leave the transfer windows open when you finish

i would love to see ns using bit torrent on high demand releases (2.0).. but i don't see it happening

bittorrent rules I agree with this suggestion

The problem with using BitTorrent for distributing NS 2.0 is that almost everyone will close BT once they get the file because they'll need the bandwith to play and they'll be too eager to wait while others complete the download.

hence my plea....help others get ns like others helped you to get ns (should it go out on bt)

If there is a Bittorrent release, it will be purely community driven. I don't see Flayra or the other devs going out of their way to setup a Bittorrent share, when they'll have all the headaches of setting up the normal mirrors already.

If you want a Bittorrent release, organize it. Get people together who will be willing to put the file up for sharing. Track down someone with uber bandwith willing to get the ball rolling. You have a month to get some people interested in it, so get cracking!

While that certainly is true, since everyone won't be finishing at the same time the file chunks will still distribute across the peers properly. It's in EVERYONE's best interest to use bit torrent. It minimizes Flayra's bandwidth costs and maximizes our download speeds. Bit Torrent links are also very very simple to set up. All you have to do is create a tracker, and then open a download window. Done.

It would be great if the community took it upon themselves to do this, but it would be much preferable to have an official endorsement. I want to prove once and for all that P2P networking has an essential place in the internet, and releasing a high profile mod on it is one way to do that. The Redhat ISO release has already done that to some extent but thats just those <sarcasm>communist open source geeks</sarcasm>.

BitTorrent is an infinitely preferable alternative to a direct download. I hope/wouldn't-be-suprised-if it becomes the standard protocol for high profile releases.

Obviously I'll be downloading the game as soon as it's available on July 31st.

This day (unfortunately for me) falls on a Thursday, so what will most likely end up happening is I'll start the BitTorrent download before I go to work, and then leave BT running all day so others can grab it from me.

Sadly, my cable modem's upstream is capped at 30k/s, but that's still not a bad contribution when combined with a few other folks running BitTorrent.

Note that there are certain ISPs (I believe Comcast is one of them) that do not allow server hosting using their cable connections.

Well, I've not looked into setting up BT, but I leave my computer on 24/7.... and I'd be willing to set it up if I could get 2.0 to send to people.... infact, I might not even be able to play around release anyway, and I've got other computers I could load 2.0 onto if I wante to catch a game or 2... but for the community I'd give up my bandwidth (512k ADSL) for them!

P.S. I *think* it's only 128k up, but I've got no cap.

I would be willing to help a bit torrent release anyway I can. I have a semi-decent connection with 384K up (supposedly). Is it as simple as leaving your client open after downloading? I don't have static ip's, so running any form of server is currently not an option.

I realize all this is covered in the link on the first page, but my parents silly isp is filtering it for content for some reason. ph33r bit-torrent corrupting our kids, I guess.
• regisregis Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10580Members
well i highly highly doubt i will be playing 2.0 when its released, probably week or so before i do play. i leave comp up 24/7, i'd deffinately leave up my torrent during release and night.

maybe i'll talk to monse..it benefits everyone using, even the CRC'd file on the host.. (monse: if you read.. get in touch with me.. for OTHER reasons too)

Well, never used the prgoram before, did some trial runs today to see if it would be worth it, and well, Im sold. I'll see if I can stir up some official download (ill have mine up and running), and if Flay doesnt want to, Ill post mine up to get the file going and post a link in here.

I'm gonna try to clear a few things up

-You can upload while you download
-All you gotta do is start the download and it'll upload for you
-Here's another version which I think works better, you can easily change max upload rate and max uploads ( anyone who LOWERS one of these may forever burn in heck )
It also shows you a "share rating" ( though I'm not sure if the original does this )
The share rating is how much you've downloaded versus uploaded
So if everyone waits til this is AT LEAST 1.0, preferably more
We'd all be happy and giggly in no time
hehe

is there a way i can set it to use my website bandwidth?
because if there is i maybe able to do it that way, I'll have the file as soon as its available anyways.
PM me if someone knows how to do this, and I'll get some more backing and try to get a word into MonsE-ie-poo

Website bandwidth ?
Well you could...
uuh
Upload it there and use it as a plain old mirror ?
hehe

i love bittorrent : it was so fast downloading the matrix trailers and red hat 9. even if 20 people do it (the usual number of people i see in the BT client) its gonna be faster (no waiting) than file planet

oh yeah if you get the experimental (its stable at the moment tho) client you can cap the upload to whatever you want after you d/l it. but if you wanna leave it on all night ( 56k works for BT and Me) put it to unlim - faster download if you let it upload more

i mentioned that before, but it would be gone in a flash. this way it could stay up probably longer and more people would be able to use it. But i really have no idea how it works. I'll look into it more tomorrow night.

yeah ill leave bt on for a few days so ppl can leech (30kbps up)

please get us bittorrent.

who knows how to make a tracker, seed a file, all that important stuff?

whats so different about bt than normal filesharing? I mean normally for me I download off a user and then they disconnect and I'm left with 23% (for example) of an unuseable file.
• EzekielEzekiel Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3006Members
with bt you connect to everyone who has a copy/is downloading the file. they leech it off a seed (or seeds) and as soon as theyve got somewhere around a meg of the file they start to upload it to whoevers in the tier below em. you get huge amounts of bandwidth being made available. and its the future

Yeah, well my cable ISP limits uploads to 15 k/s so I probably won't be getting it from bittorrent. (bittorrent only gives you as much as you can upload) However, bittorrent is pretty cool because you can even upload from a partially downloaded file.

not strictly true, itll work on some ratio i assume. i ul at 30kbps, dl at 120kbps on bt.

The only flaw i find with this is that it is also possible to download from people who only have a part of the file downloaded, and despite whatever you say, there WILL be at least 250 people out of the 10,000 Plus who play NS that want to host the file.

Bittorrent rocks, it works, and NS2.0 should be Bittorrent.

Besides, what's to stop anyone from taking the file and Bittorrenting it themselves, anyway?
