    A 23-year-old man making fireworks blew off the fingers on his left hand Monday in the South Austin neighborhood.

    The man had loaded matches into a copper pipe in the back yard of a friend's home in the 200 block of South Lotus Avenue.

    He tried to crimp the edges with a hammer at about 5:40 p.m. when the contents "exploded on him," said Austin District Capt. Mike Patton.

    The man was in serious condition Monday night in Mt. Sinai Hospital, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Dennis Gault.
