Just so you know, pug = pick up game. It's where you find a bunch of random people, and play pub style (except all the puggers are good, and know what they're doing) Good place to test/learn new strats. Also a fun place to be ^__^
Could someone point out to me what the point is in having people idle in your channel? Afaik idling is being logged in to an IRC channel, but not actively chatting. I've had these experiences where I join a channel with 20+ people and none of them respond. This is not meant as criticism, I'm just asking a question related to the topic at hand.
also you might wanna post what network the irc chan is on <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Sometimes people just aren't on IRC. You just have to pick the right times. I'll bet that somebody will answer you if you go into #naturalselection at most points during the day.
The point of me wanting you to idle is to get support for this new channel. I want to get it setup before v1.1 comes out and having a lot of ppl idleing will increase support. Therefore, by the time v1.1 comes out, 50 new clans will spring up and will be using this channel as a means to find a pug game.

Chatrooms are used for much more than chatting. Believe me that if every person in every channel was chatting for whenver they were in the channel (not even idling), there would be so much useless chatter, IRC would get annoying. The purpose of idling in a channel is the same purpose behind staying connected to a messaging system, even if you're not talking to somebody. I guess the concept is beyond some people, but they point is you are accessible to people who want to talk to you and people that you want to talk to are more accessible for you.
It's much easier to connect to a channel and say "Want a pug?" and play with people who have made themselves available at your disposal as opposed to posting on these forums, waiting for a moderator to handle letting it go through in the "organized play" board, and actually getting enough people to play a decent game.

It's a simple and very smart idea. If you don't want to play, don't idle.

I'm sorry basic concepts elude you. Jim is trying to add something to the community here, as generally if you ask for a scrim or a pug in #naturalselection, you'll get sent to look in other pertinent channels such as #findnsscrim. In there, it has been very useful for clans to be able to ask for a scrim in 1 channel and have access to multiple clans as opposed to joining 30 different clan channels and asking each one of them, many which probably don't want to immediately scrim.
In the end, the point in idling there (which you don't HAVE to do), is the fact that Jim is trying to make it easier for people who want to play an organized game to find an organized game to play. Take a look at how many "I need a good NS server" posts you see daily. This is just an easier method, and I intend on idling there to aid and provide a server to pug in.

As for E-Th33ph's post, it seems like we are talking about "idling" in two different meanings. What you mean is joining a channel and monitoring it for posts, correct? In that case, idling in such a channel is of course good, but that isn't what I would call idling. What I consider idling is logging into a channel and then going away from your comp or otherwise ignoring the issue, making you little more than a name in a list. So, if by "come and idle in my channel" he means your version of idling, then fine with me. If he means MY version, the idea is pointless.
Yeah, I'm under the assumption that it's my definition. It's pointless to log on just to fill another name onto the list. It's most useful if you want to partake in the community. If not, well, it's not useful for you to be there at all then. Most people who "idle" are rarely idle.
Idling makes people think that people are listening, even if they're not. Plus, if there's 150 people in the channel, you THINK you have a better chance of finding a scrim/pug, even if they aren't even there.

EDIT: It's even more fun to see the late late late night chat.
