I Just Played A Really Bad Game.

Don't even know if this is the right...
forum to put it in, but I might as well speak my mind, I'm pretty **** off.
I'm sitting here on tanith, on the CoFR server. Everyone's whining about how there's no comm, the classic example of where no one commands for 5 minutes then someone joins and gets in the chair. Now naturally, I would hop in, but I was already in reactor room, so you can forget about walking all the way back at the beginning. Someone jumps in, puts down a TF, some IPs, an armory, and that's it. He jumps out. Great. By then I'm dead and I have respawned. I jumped in the chair, recycled the TF, told everyone to go to satcom, etc etc. I recycle the old stuff, put down the new stuff, it's all good.

Then of course, some idiot whines about how crappy of a job I'm doing or something (seemed pretty good to me, considering I don't even comm at all), blah blah. So finally, they're chewing on our node in chemical transport room, I waypoint everyone, only half go, the other half are humping the armory. The node dies, the gorge is building in Acidic. No one seems to care, they just keep on bitching. Finally, the upgrades for the classic JP rush are done, but the same chemical node is getting chewed, and almost no one cares. I hop out, try to safe it, and we made it. I die, and then we're overrun again and the aliens kill the node. By now they have 2 hives. Here's the lame part: I tell them all the upgrades are done, and someone needs to get in the chair asap and drop goodies (we had enough res). No one does, and they start whining about how we're losing. I call them idiots and I get kicked. Granted I lightly violated the no whining rule, but come on, even occasional cussing is allowed if it slips out on accident. I think I'll give the CoFR server one more try.

The daytime crowd seems to have a higher concentration of nublets than the nighttime crowd, in my experience. Even then it's still a lot better than most servers.

Crappy games are generally very seldom on CoFR. Sorry you happened to get bit by one.

No, its not the right forum to put it in.

    Try www.cofrfps.com

You might find that the people who were playing with you are forum members and you could talk it out and help to improve gameplay on the server. The admins would be aware of what was occuring and discuss ways to deal with the issue. The way to improve the community spirit on a server is to get involved in that community. Be part of the solution. Sign up at the forum and express your concerns. I am sure you will find people receptive to the discussion if its approached in a mature and civil fashion.

As for having a bad experience as commander, hey, welcome to the club. Commanding is a thankless task sometimes. I understand you were roped in as commander, since no-one else would do it. We have some good threads on tactics and commanding styles in the forum. You might find we some good advice for future occasions when you get forced to be commander. Anyway, enough on this subject in this forum. I have 1 rule i always follow

Never ever jump in the comm chair after someone else has started a game.

Any mistakes that have been made and such will always come back on you because you are the COMM.

If and when i want to comm a game i start the game as comm and play my strat, win or lose.

I know some times the comm leaves or gets ejected and no one wants to take over which is fine with me i would rather lose the game and start another one.

Haha, I was playing in that game. We actually had two gorges, and I hid lots of defense chambers in hard to reach places to help the team. For example, your guys kept dieing around chemical because I had cleverly placed a few defense chambers in the nearby vent early on .

BTW, I find that, except for in rare circumstances, relocating to a hive location means certain loss, especially in the CoFR server. Instead of going to Satcomm, you should have relocated to chemical. With a few mines in the satcomm vent, you could have held both chemical and satcomm with ease. And since acidic is so nearby, it would have been easy to continually pump marines up the elevator and take that too.

Commanding a bunch of nubs...best advice I can give is to work the praise/punish angles with them almost constantly. It helps if you have voicecomm (I think you do). If someone does something you want them to do, say "Good job "so-and-so," or "Good work so-and-so." If someone kills a wave of 3 aliens by himself, congratulate him. And if someone doesn't do what you want, tell your marines "Because so-and-so didn't help pressure acidic, the aliens were able to overrun our chemical node and now I can't buy anyone jetpacks and nice guns." Nice side effect to that kind of motivation- if you do it enough, a lot of players will move the blame from you to the people who really deserve it. Give nice equipment and health to team players, leave players who are not following orders out in the cold. But do not ever, ever insult anyone. Because if you insult someone, even if they deserve it, you automatically lose any respect they might have had for you. Instead, rely on the "Because...now..." statements like the one above. Doing these things has a subtle effect on players - more people will gravitate to the people you praise, will avoid following people you condescend, and occasionally the bad players will change their ways in order to get the goods.

As much as I am for cutting the comm some slack, the same goes the other way around. If there is one thing I hate, it's being bossed around the entire game, receiving waypoints here and there, holding positions against overwhelming opposition - basically doing what I can to keep the comm happy, only to lose the game (either because my teammates screwed up or the aliens were just plain BETTER than we) and have "omg all marines are freaking n00bs you are all so stupid" thrown in my face by the comm. "Go and play on a better server", I know, but this happens even on the best servers if some jackass decides to be comm. Don't dis me when I'm doing my job.

What? Just because the game on most public servers is a spiteful experience when it comes to dealing with other players, its not allowed to be discussed frankly on the forums?

People come to the server to have fun, and if somebody takes a negative attitude then 1 guy can ruin the experience for all 17 other players, that is why you got kicked.

I have some Ideas that might help:

    1) be more mellow
    2) if you cant do #1 dont get in the chair
    3) if you cant do #1 or #2 consider taking a break when you get mad instead of taking it out on the other players.
    4) if you cant do #1 #2 or #3 get kicked again

I was playing during this game, and just felt I needed to clear things up since this is a great sever, with great people, and I know I did not do anything to help the situation.

First of all I am pretty sure that there were 2 cofr people on at the time. Second, you were kicked for foul and abusive langauge both in the written chat and the voice comm. Insulting people is not allowed period on this sever (ie I have a habbit of saying "noob" and recieved a 30 min time-out for saying it) and you were not only insulting but swearing and so on, which is posted in the start-up as not alowed.

The only complaints I remember about your commandering was "Make up your mind" because In a 30 - 60 second time period you had told us to goto reactor room, fusion, and sat comm. You turned around and called as all "retards", "liars", and "idiots" when we pointed this out. Then later you noticed the mistake when we told you to look in your console and replied with "It was a @#$%ing typo, how am I suppose to remember typos?" and never even attempted an apology to the team.

Then as soon as you got the upgrades you jumped out of the chair and starting telling us all in a rather rude ways to give you jet packs and hmgs. In which a reply was, you just wanted to hog the dying fun of a crappy game. And you did the commanding you suffer the end, why should we?

I for one think the kick was more then fair. I also think this should have been delt with on the cofr sever, and that this was only posted here as an atempt to make cofr look bad in a public place.

I appologize to you and cofr, for not helping the situation and perhaps for even being part of the reason you were swearing and being insulting to the team. I have played with you once or twice before and would like to play with you again, but you do need to calm down and follow the sever rules.

More lies. First of all, I did not see any CoFR on. I might be mistaken, but I did not see any on. Second, the only abusive language I used was calling everyone on the marine team a bunch of idiots, which kind of slipped out. I'm sorry if I offended you. It tends to happen when the marine team isn't doing anything right. Third, I did not use voice comm once in that game. If you saw the little signal at the middle-right of your screen, that was me accidentally hitting the key. I never once spoke. Fourth, I did not swear. Check the logs. If I'm wrong, I'll accept it and stand corrected. I have a habbit of saying "WTH" or "OMG bs" sometimes, but I quickly apologize realizing it's the wrong server to say it on.

First of all, I said "Should we go for reactor room? How about cargo?" No one replied. I took that as a signal that I should choose. I accidentally said fusion (I got the hive names confused), but I then said satcomm without realizing my error. Thanks for pointing out the error in-game. I never called anyone a retard from what I can recall, I only called YOU a liar for saying to go to reactor room, and I called everyone idiots at the end when I was incredibly **** off by everyone saying how bad of a commander I was yet no one jumps in the chair . More lies. I told you guys upgrades and stuff are going/done, and I'm jumping out of the chair because certain people (i.e. YOU) were pushing me beyond the edge, and I figured I might as well let you have a chance to comm. As you can see in my sig (to boost me ego a bit), I'm much better out of the chair than in it. Oh, and my the way, I never told you guys in a "rather rude way" to give ME JPs/HMGs. I said "I'm getting out, you guys can give yourselves jetpacks and HMGs". I never said in a rude way for you guys to give them to ME. Why should you? I'll reiterate. You were the one constantly complaining and whining (against the rules, remember?) throughout the entire game while the team told you to calm down and shut up. Hogging the dying fun of a crappy game? Don't quite understand what you're trying to say here.

When will you ever stop? Of course the kick was fair, I overreacted (much less than you make it sound like I did) and I called the team idiots, which was unprofessional and I deserved the kick. Deal with this on the CoFR server? I don't think so, you just don't want me exposing all of your lies to the NS community. I didn't post this at all to make CoFR look bad. Even if I did, you think anyone would listen to me? Notice the "I think I'll give the CoFR server one more try" at the end of my post. By the way, I did try it again and the game(s) were absolutely top-notch. Looks like the night-crowd is the group to be with.

Your minuscule attempt to spread a pack of lies has failed, lemming. It seems that the only one being more insulting to the team than me at the time was in fact you. I believe it is you who needs to calm down and follow the server rules. Last night I was in a game with you, and you started up some comments about how "whining is not allowed" and other invalidated comments. Of course you didn't quite tell it directly to me, but it was pretty obvious who the intended recipient was. I responded and you shrugged it off. I hope I don't see that again from you.

I usually dont give those kind of servers a second chance, Jmmsbnd007.

Give me the IP to the COFR server and ill play some; if i see you in it i'll be the "second witness"

BTW i dont smell anything burning; though i see heat-waves. (Watch out! Hot air rises, and the mods live upstairs! )

It's almost always full, sometimes a bit laggy, but overall it seems if you're there at night it's quite excellent.

THATS your problem! You probably played durring the day (where they are). Their bedtime doesn't let them stay up too late (thus explaining why its better at night)

My basic rule of commanding is "Expect them not to." Expect them not to take the phase gate. Expect them not to protect the res node. etc etc. With this you can plan properly so that no one player can screw you up mid-game or something. My complex rule of commanding is "If its been 5 minutes and no-ones put down a IP they probably already have 1/2 the team dead and got carapace. Is it really worth getting in there now?"

That and leave the server if there are too many bad players on it. Its always plan C though.

I was banned from CoFR =\
For unknown reasons, too. No warning, nothing. I was flying around in a Jetpack with a shotgun, saw a Skulk pumped 2 bullets (well, not bullets but you get the idea... pack of bullets?) into it, killed it, and went to Chemical Transport room, where I killed a resource node (help of a few other guys), went into Satellite Communications, killed 2 more Skulks, and rested for a second on the over hang. I then pumped aimless rounds into the hive, assuming my teammates would protect me. Well--they tried. The Skulks killed them, ran up to where I was, and caught me off guard because I had no bullets. I rushed forward at one, knifing it, and I got one slash off him, then I was banned.
Very sudden, but lots of CoFR on the Aliens' side.

I play occasionally on CoFR... it's not Utopia, but it's a solid server.

Anyways I read this and just had to laugh...
