been happening for a while
Ok, I know I just made another post in this forum, but it seems that my HL problems are not over
Half-life will run fine.
Natural selection will not.
I get an illegal operation as follows:
HL caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:00000001.

If I try and play even normal HL after one of these illegal operations, I will get the same crash, even though regular HL normally runs fine!
I should probably point out that this is the exact same problem I was having before. At first I tried re-installing HL, but it just got worse each time (ie, stopped working with regular HL, started giving the error 3 times instead of 1 e.t.c).
The reason I thought my problem was fixed was that I defragged my computer (hadn't done so for 6 months...) and re-installed HL. IT WORKED! So then I reinstalled NS.
It didn't work.
I think this could be because I didn't properly uninstall NS the last time, I deleted all the files but forgot to do Add/remove programs on it, so now its stuck in the Add/remove programs list and clicking it does nothing.
Ideas? Suggestions? Please? Pretty please?

Come on, somebody?
MonsE? Anyone?
/Me wants NS!
Ok, rather than spending a lot of time poking around, can you post your \NS\config.cfg file here (zipped, as a forum attachment)? we can take a look and see what's what.
Like I said, regular HL works fine now that i've defragged, but NS does not. I think there may be some residual files left over (even though i've scoured the registry thorougly) which are causing it to go pear shaped.
The other solution I considered was formatting my hard-drive, but that would lead to.... complications. I don't want to have to do that.
I should probably test to see if other mods work...
Oh, and i'm running win98.

Yes, and this points us to a config.cfg issue.
The config.cfg file is in your NS directory. So an example would be c:\sierra\half-life\ns\config.cfg. Zip that file and attach a copy up here for us to look at it.
It seems that NS will run just fine if I go into half-life and select it from custom games and THEN play. But not from the shortcut.....
Im dloading DoD now to see if that behaves the same.
I couldn't do that, the thought of having a unclean registry would kill me :/
It works if I start regular HL first, but not if I use the start menu shortcut.
reinstall win98 is all i can say

Hmmmmm... have you made any changes to your shortcut parameters? Can you tell us what's on the commandline of your NS shortcut? (right-click the shortcut and choose properties, then copy and paste us the 'target' line with all its contents).
Maybe it was because I was playing regular HL before I tried NS? I don't know! AAARGH! Re-installing windows98 is starting to sound like the only option.
I have the config file for "They hunger". That seems to work fine, if it helps you at all.
Here is the config file for regular HL, which WORKED until a few seconds ago.....
cl_musicenable 0
cl_musicvolume 0
And see if the MP3 loader is causing it. That's the only meaningful difference in this area... And if HL is crashing, my suggestion here isn;t likely to help, as HL does not have an MP3 loader like NS... Doh. Running low on suggestions here.
I assume by that you mean you've run OUT of suggestions
Oh well, I don't blame you. Valve was far less helpful, and its THEIR game... grr....
Might have to get windows XP for the sole purpose of playing NS 2.0......
*edit* I take back what I said about valve, I just got a reply which was very helpful, but not very useful... if you know what i mean *edit*
I found out because an email from valve suggested shutting down all other programs except systray and explorer, so I did. IT WORKED!
So I closed it down, loaded up cheating-death and... it crashed. B*****D. (i said that out loud)
So I thought, wait a minute.... and I tried turning CD OFF and playing NS. IT WORKED!
So I tried re-installing C-D, IT STILL WORKED!!!!
So it was cheating-death all along. Finally the 4 weeks of hell are over, and I can once again play my one true love, natural selection.
Until 2.0 comes out
