Serious Dicussion On Ns And Hl2

so this topic is for just on discussing the strife and ideas people would have for a HL2 release, and to point out to the devs (not that im saying that you dont know already) some of the MAJOR advantages of having NS in HL2, one i am going to point out right now, that having NS in HL2 almost right after it comes out will put people in a posistion for when they complete the game they will turn right to ns, and with the countless number of people that are going to leave off playing HL when HL2 comes out because then CS:CZ will be out and that will also shave a number of people off the HL community, to put it in more simple terms, to have a dev team as good as this, work on an ns hl2 release i think (and probably many others do aswell) that Valve will see you in the community and do what they did with DoD.

Oh, and PLEASE don't let Valve do what they did with DoD. That being taking a very good niche-market game with a loyal following and changing it so drastically to make it appeal to a mass audience that a lot of what made it great to begin with is now gone forever. Not to mention that the notion making DoD into a serious BF1942 contender at retail level is laughable.

I think i speak for a great majority of the NS community when i say that we'd love to see NS transferred to HL2, but that's where it ends as far as us forumites go. The dev team are well aware of our desires to see NS expand in the future far beyond the limited engine that is HL1.
To end on a fairly blunt note. This isn't our decision. Flayra has (in an interview, god knows the url) stated that he is interested in the move to the Source engine, and HL2, but that's as far as it goes. There might be a "NS 2", we'd love to see it, but lets leave it to the dev team to make that decision and lets not give them more pressure than what they're already enduring whilst working on NS 1.1.

Afaik Flayra's only been working on NS for 2 years, not 4.
But contrary to your post, Flayra is interested in the Source engine, and the possibility of "NS 2". But this is mere curiosity on his part rather than any definate plans to make the transfer.

I say once again, there is no discussion whether NS should be transferred to another engine or not. It's not for us to decide, and to even the most casual forumite, it's abundantly clear we all want to see NS on the Source engine.

I beleive it is very realistic that the game could come out rigth when half life 2 comes (probably not the finest piece of work a mod can get with only 3 months... but remember source was "made for mods") out... remember valve is releasing the tools to make mods for half life 2 before half life 2 comes out.... although not that flayra would take the time to go full on with half life 2 and totally ditch "ns". Furthermore, I don't beleive people will be ditching half life in fact half life 2 is going to "act" like an expansion or mod since you can go on to steam and select "half life 2" on the game list as well as half life. Although for the default browser such as WON im not sure ,but its Valve's way of trying to keep it so half life and half life 2 will just act as op4 did with half life.

The timescale of 3 months, even doing a port is ridiculous. It would be buggier than NS 1.04, look a whole lot worse and will make you wonder why the hell did you bother downloading i. Think realistically. It'll take him another 2 years to code it for HL2. So anyone with any hopes of seeing "NS 2" this side of 2004, i REALLY wouldn't count on it.

Before NS was even released (edit: by released I mean announced - not beta 1.0 release) there was a year, or two - I forget, of work behind it. They did what HL2 did - they didnt announce NS untill they had a good foothold.

Im not one to say either way, but it is a fact that NS2 would take _massive_ amounts of time *espcially since Flay is the only coder* and being curious is a good thing, but is it enough? We'll see in time I guess.
Transfering to HL2 would mean you already have the balance and the idea of the game done. All it would require is transfering some code (my guess is alot will be semi-compatable) and remaking the maps/graphics.
I could care less ether way, but my point is transfering to HL2 probably wouldn't be extreamly difficult. I can only assume that HL1 and HL2 will have a very similar coding base.
I know work would be involved but not nearly as much as was needed to create the game in the first place. Have you ever ported code before, have you? No? I'm a programmer, I have, its not that hard if not a little repetitive.
NS2 on the scource engine, yes... no, who cares. Hats off to flay for all the work hees done already and a strong fanbase of support to whatever he decides to do in the future.

I couldn't begin to guess at what would be required of coding -- Flay really ripped the HL code apart creating NS. He worked on 1.0 for 2 years, and for 18 months of that he did nothing *but* NS (he quit work to write it). Yeah, a fair amount of that was concept design, but a LOT of it was coding the HUGE modifications that NS makes to HL.
Don't hold your breath.
If Flayra decides to do NS 2 ... I guess he will not be satisfied with just transferring NS1.1 to the Source engine. There are so much more possibilities, who want to be exhausted. ... I guess NS 2 would be quite a different game. And remember what Flayra said about the Multiserver sessions. If he is going to develop a new version on HL2 ... he will try to put that in. I suggest, that we all should look forward to 1.1 and have a great time with it. And in that time, I think, Flayra will choose if there will be NS2 or not. And if he chooses to create it, I will give him the time to put all that great stuff in, that he is thinking of.
