Lock Down

<div class="IPBDescription">Locked forums!</div> Wow....... locked forum topics? They are probably going to lock this too but what is up with these? I understand we have the right to free speach and we should here if we follow the rules like no extensive cursing or anything like that... such as trying to break the language code by spelling the word a different way. I think we should be able to talk about what we want to unless we break the rules, if we or someone else does then they can lock it down but unless they do I think they should keep them open unless at least sixty percent of the people reading the topic say it should be locked. Like the one a while ago about CS vs. NS was actually coming along well with good points. Untill it was locked down... (You can compare HL2 and Donkey Kong) So I personally think unless the rules are broken and broken in a serious way they should allow the topic to stay open. <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo-->

You could always create a new account under a different name if they did.

This is a privately run forum on a privately owned server. Your "right" to free speech is null and void. Your new constitution is the forum FAQ.
And as to leaving threads open until they break a rule, er, the reason they get locked is BECAUSE they break the forum rules.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It says "<i>Congress</i> shall make no law...". Server admins are not congress; therefore they are not bound by that law. Neither are Forum Admins.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This is from another thread, applies here too.

...and they could always ban by IP address.
As we always do.
Anyway, as already said, freedom of speech is a defensive right against the state. It has little to do with private rooms, as this boards is one. If you feel like expressing your opinion, you'll seldomly get locked in here (Unless that opinion happens to be "B|_|rn 411 n1gg4z!", in which case you'll experience a velocity as it could be induced by my boot connecting to your backside.). Most locked posts are because of repetitions, organizatorical issues (people trying to discuss IRC bans openly...), or flames, which, if you get down to it, have little to do with peoples actual <i>opinions</i>.
If you feel like discussing a topics lock, contact the mod/admin responsible, do not drag it in the open; it'll <i>always</i> get ugly.
yeah they can ban ya by ip then in which case yer done for if they get ya by ip,just try to be civil in yer posts, opinions etc. and ya should be fine.
AHAHA oh god thats funny.
Amen ! 99% of the world has no idea what freedom of speech really means.
Speaking as a server admin, it takes quite some time to ensure everything is running smoothly for the enjoyment of others.
Those behind the scenes here need to be congratulated for making this community a decent one.

Freedom of speech = You can say anything you want as long as it doesnt offend anyone. And because humans are strange anything can offend anyone so actually you cant say anything. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Yes, that's the definition I subscribe to, too. The legal one from the US constitution is not relevant. I'd go even further and say that even offending people must be tolerated. They are free to ignore you, and most things of importance offend one person or another, so that's a necessary evil.
Basically there are two camps: One believes in order through power, the other in the self-regulation of anarchy. I'm in the latter, as I've observed that unmoderated forums are much more interesting and spawn more valuable debates than the controlled ones (which tend to mirror their creators' opinions). Of course every topic spawns multiple flamewars as well, but everyone is free to decide whether to enjoy some (re-)creative swearing or contribute something constructive to the topic. As Usenet showed, the flamewars can coexist with the serious discussion in peace, functioning as lightning rod of aggression.
But as long as you fill up his server space, it's common courtesy to obey the rules of the guy who pays the bill, even if the rules are stupid.

I like pie!
Sorry! DON'T BAN ME!
Honestly, some people just go too far. Follow the rules and there won't be any need for that shiny little "lock" button! (Yes mods, I know it's pretty. Please don't press it.)
hehe, ok, its true, its not that bad than i just wrote.. but it goes in that direction...
and now lets see if that is my first post that get edited.. or i will start a huge flame war and the thread will get locked (because the americans see that arent right and have no good arguments and just lock the thread...... hehe, nonono, dont take that serious)
PS:its too hot here in.. switzerland.. do you know that in switzerland we have towns? yea, and we even have television.. and obviously we have.. internet :-) i just wanted to say that, because some of my friend spend a year in america and said that many americans dont know that we have towns.. or even television.
ou yes.. we have normal houses, not only chalets, you know those little houses in the mountains.. made of wood.
hehe, lets see what will happen in here :-) (im just in a good mood and want to talk a little bit *g*)
What can you possibly do if an admin locks your post? Thats what I thought.
but go to the IRC channel if you want a true example of no speech freedom. (the IRC newtork doesn't belong to them by the way <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> )...
I'm idling there most of the time because as soon as I say something I can get kicked...
Bunch of people looking at this post eh?
I like pie too!

debating the fact at hand?
actualy i think its not so bad in that forum, well, too many topics are close and nobody knows why.. but ok...
what shocked me was that they closed the disscussion forum, we had some REALY nice discussions there, but for me it was a little bit so that in many discussions we attaced the politic of america(not america it self) and there were no good arguments from the americans and the disscussion went bader and bader.. until the whole forum was closed.. for me that is censuration, and i realy DONT like that...
Your free to do basically anything within the law, which means if you want to talk to your friend, you can, because there is no law prohibiting that.
<b>Freedom of Speech</b>
Let me start out by pointing out that I am a huge supporter of FoS, and I am alos a patriot. I love America. That being said, America is <i>not</i> the rest of the world, hence, American Law does <i>not </i>apply to the rest of the world! I am personally ignorant of other country's laws, however, I do know that not all of them have freedom of speech. What if a person from another country, with different laws posts on this forum? What makes you think that They will follow 'American' Laws? Why should another country's laws apply to them? In that case, do they lack FoS on these forums? Where's that fair?
In essance, the Internet has no well defined rules. That being said, You are welcome to do whatever you want, however, you will have to pay a price. The consiqunces of stating you're opinion might very well be that it gets locked. You see, even thought the internet doesn't have rules persay, these forums do. Read those in the FAQ. You must always keep in mind that, while in your day to day lives, you might enjoy certain freedoms, that doesn't mean they apply online! We've got to respect the decisions of those in power where ever we live, including online. Guess what? Forum Admins have power here! *shrugs* I guess we have to live with thier decisions, or else we can stop frequenting these forums. No big loss to them, is it?
<b>NS Forum Admins</b>
It's been said before, but I'll repeat to make it clear. <i>NS Forum Admins are the ones in chanrge, and we need to respect that.</i> I personally feel that they do a GREAT job, and deserve a real pat on the back. However, I've wondered why they've not banned me b/c of stupidity yet, but, I guess they're kinder than I'd be, hehe. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> What really gets me though, is when people claim they are ban crazy, or what have you. I've join other forums, where admins were not present, or where they were everywhere. In both situations, the Forums went to [colorful metaphor] PDQ. I find the NS forums a wonderful place to 'live', and a refreshing place to share ideas. If you don't like the admins here, go else where. You'll come back in short order, with a much changed opinion.
<b>To Sum up</b>
policeunit7, This is the internet, not america. Here, I can creatre a set of forums that excludes people b/c of race, religion, or what have you. There are no rules online, and to be honest, what you've said in here only aplies in america, and in the Real World you life in, not on the NS forums, or any other place online.
GG I suppose.
