Alright if you don't like CS I couldn't really give a crap, I don't need to hear it. Now that I've made that point clear, I gots a problem. The shadows in CS are ungodly dark. If there is even the slightest bit of shadow its 100% pitch black in that spot, I can't see anything. Light areas are fine and dandy, but I need to know if theres a way to correct this. And please don't suggest gamma seeing as most servers restrict it to I think 3. I tried simply increasing brightness but that doesn't really effect shadows so much as light areas.

    Just boost your gamma a little by going to your vidcard drivers in Advanced Display Properties. I used to live in a world of shadow too in NS and CS, but now those days are gone. My gamma is at max with brightness at 6, and for a while I still couldn't see crap. So I boosted the gamma on my vidcard just a tad and it makes a world of difference.

    But seriously, it sounds like a video card issue, not a game issue. Check your settings, readmes and such.

    If its just your CS doing this, than simply delete your config.cfg in /cstrike/ and next time you run it should default to your current HL config value for the gamma. key word here being should.

    Alright the problem with increasing gamma on my video card is that its already high, if I increased it any more than it already is the colors on my screen would start to distort. As for the overbright, its gl_overbright and I've already tried it, and it doesn't even change the brightness any. I did try gl_monolights "1" and that removes all shadows, but I think that might be considered h4x, plus the fact that it wont save in my config file... haven't tried sticking it in autoexec though.

    As a last resort, I think you can turn off ambient lighting or something. That might not get rid of all the shadows, but I think it gets rid of some. Or something. I'm not much of a leet half life haxor.

    Get 3Ddeep gamma software, it filters for dynamic 3D shadowing and is specificly made for games like HL.

    Been using it for like a year and it works great.

    PS I had the exact same problem with DoD when I started playing and this fixed it.

    I have that software, including that small overlay plastic sheet that goes on the monitor. I was fortunate to have the Adobe Gamma Loader on my computer already, so there wasn't much adjusting needed to set my gamma correctly.

    I would have liked Counter-Strike if it wasn't for, sadly, the players. The game itself seems fun, but the players are often elitist or cheaters.

    I looked at that software, all it does is modify the gamma for my video card settings. Is there anything else I can do besides that? And for all you people that apparently can't read the first post, I'll say it again,

    Wah. What is it about "that mod" that fries the parts of brains meant for deduction and consideration? Seemed an understandable question to me...

    Anyway, I had similar issues with Deus Ex- turned out that in the case of that game, the error was down to badly configured drivers (issue whereupon they were recognised as existing but not actually used in graphics processing)- and I suppose that something similar is possible with CS. If you're sure that gamma isn't the cause and you don't want to try (too many, anyway) outside settings, then maybe your .cfg is corrupt. Who knows...

    [EDIT:] Ah. Unfortunate choice of thread title... perhaps some are entering and not bothering to read past it. And have you considered trying the CS tech support forum? For all I know it could be a common issue... [/EDIT]

    Yea well I thought people might be halfway intelligent since technically its a problem with Half-Life itself, but because NS lets me change gamma I don't have a problem with it. As far as video drivers go, I'll look into that but I don't think its a problem with the card.

    I found out that in order for gl_overbright to work gl_texsort has to be set to 1, but most servers block the gl_overbright command, since apparently its a "h4x0r" command.
