Vh1 Top 100 Songs Of Past 25 Years

If you didn't see this, don't feel bad. The list they created was the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. The only songs they had on it were pop rock, and the occasional hiphop song just so they didnt get heat from hiphop fans. An example of how stupid some of the picks were... Britney spears - Baby one more time. Their explanation why they picked it? Oh man Britney is hot and thats the first time we saw her. Not because its a good song mind you, but thats pretty much what they said. I've lost all faith in VH1 knowing what good music is.

There's a reason those places are called popular culture hubs. I'm sorry you found out why. Although VH1 is just as much of a sellout as MTV is, don't forget that MTV has the crappier shows The only "music video" channels that don't make me depressed are the ones that play music 24/7 and come with the 900 bajillion channels+ service that I got up in college.

Also don't forget that MTV and VH1 are one in the same company...

blarg. My Top 100 songs of all time, differs from VH1's Top 100 songs of all time.

    I loathe countdowns......

Ever since p-rock went off air (in the uk, sky digital) i've had no music tv to watch. It was constant punk, ska and hiphop all day and night.

They were top 100 songs of past 25years. Though I think Mozart wouldn't have seen the list even if it had been "...of all times".

    It doesn't matter.

My take on the Top 100 of the past 25 is different from your take on them

It just makes the whole countdown thing sort of irrelevant ya know?

I think everyones list is, but thats not the point. The point is they picked songs, not because they were good, but because they stayed high up on the charts for a long time. Just because it stays on the chart doesnt mean its good. If that were true the macarena woulda been in there. If I had my way Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight would have been in the top 10.

    *Edit*

    Hes what VH1's website advertises:

The Greatest from hip-hop to pop, grunge to metal, music in the last two and half decades has been unforgettable

I watched a tad bit of it.

I agreed with some of it, but most of it was crap. I saw some AC/DC and U2 on there, so that made me happy.

Oh, the Peppers were on it too, but it wasn't my favorite song - Under the Bridge I think it was. I would've picked Give It Away. I guess that's why I'm not working for VH1 making their 100 Greatest Pop Trash Songs.

I was actually surprised to find a top position I could at least somewhat agree with. Although I'm honestly fed up with the particular song, one has to admit the Nirvana were easily the most influental band of the last ten years. Putting Micheal Jackson on place two is however a sin against god and man.

    Well they have some taste.

Wonderwall by Oasis is up there. Granted its at 95 it should be a lot higher TBH

Its one of the only songs I know of where you can play the initial few bars and have it recognised.

Now, not that I like Country music, but I do acknowledge it as a popular form of music with talented artists and whatnot... And I know there are some very popular country songs, hell there's even a couple I kinda like. But no where on this list are any of those... pffft.

And the Minibosses aren't on the damn list either. Morons!

well.... yes it does. If it's staying high in the charts, it means people are buying the songs/requesting them a lot. Which means they like them. Which means it's good. Half-Life is still in the charts, is that crap?

    **EDIT**

I agree that it's mainly 13 year old girls and dreamy boys buying Britney Spears, but if you want your songs in the charts, i suppose you have to go out and buy them, not download them. Not that anyone does, i'm just saying in general.

yea, I remember a few years ago, I could turn on Vh1 in the morning and catch some cool old school videos in between new ones that were, eh, so so. Now they play just about nothing good to speak of.

Um, I happen to buy my music. I have about 125 CD's. I don't like screwing artists :-\

Closer was at 93. Personally if we are to talk about the SINGLES that NIN did, I would have liked to have seen Head like a Hole more.

Funny. You make it sound as if 13 years olds were buying their music.

with the 13 year olds i was thinking more of requesting annoying Britney Spears songs on music channels and Justin cos "he's cute" yuk tbh

Yea, well, that doesn't get you very far, sales-wise. There is no unsafer demographic then the 'youthculture', which is why the RIAA-associates sales are currently in free fall.
  • OttoDestructOttoDestruct Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7790Members
Yep. I would have no problem with them putting some of these songs on the list since it is supposed to be a pop culture list, but putting one on there for the only reason of "they look good in the video" or some crap like that is stupid. My other point I was trying to make, was that because it is a pop culture list, it really doesn't get a wide variety of music. Like someone pointed out theres no country on it. I don't like country, but certainly there are tons of country songs more infleuntial than a lot of the songs on their list.
