Does Your Computer Ever Act Wierdly?
<div class="IPBDescription">Mine seems to almost constantly...</div> I have something of a love/hate relationship with my computer; I love it because it provides me with NS and, the NS forums, but my computer seems to hate me, as it has now done the following:
It has:
-Decided it is a 1.15mhz (it is supposed to be a 1.8)
-Decided it doesn't want to be a part of the network any more, and refuse point blank to even acknowlege that there is another computer on the network (it still does this)
-Decided it can't play half-life (illegal operation)
-Decided it can only play NS if I load a game of regular half-life first (it still does this <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )
-Decided that it won't let me get to any of the sites I have bookmarked except for google. (no, they were not just all down at the same time, because I could get to them from another computer. This was 10 minutes ago and im not sure if it's fixed yet.....)
-Decided it will suddenly make the screen go all liney and crash
-Decided it needs to change my display drivers which have worked perfectly fine until now
-Decided it will contract 16 (yes, 16) viruses in one day (that is, 16 infected files, 2 actual viruses)
-Decided it will not let me turn left in a Lucasarts adventure game who's name I will not mention...
I am starting to get afraid of my computer now; every time I turn it on I live in fear of an all-to-familiar error message appearing......
AAAAGH!! STRESS!!!!
P.S, if I get a 'this page cannot be displayed' message when I try to post this I think I will go and cry <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
(but if you are reading this I probably didn't)

And as for your problems, all I can say is welcome to the club of people who are generally hated by computers.
1) Windows 3.1?
2) Windows 95?
3) Windows 98?
4) Windows ME?
If so, I know what your problem is.
but i think its a hardware problem:
I was just finishing a model for a half life2 mod i was working on and was looking at it proudly, just about to save it when -
THE FRICKIN THING RESTARTED. I MEAN WHAT THE CRAP! ITS STUPIDLY THICK!
ahem, i have had to do it all again. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
<!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
But its done now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> and looks beter than ever <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also doesnt play DOS games **** of a PC i like my settlers 2.
Also wont let me install anything over 100 meg if im on the internet insto crash if i try :/.
Random blue screen crashs in map changes on HL never in the game only on a map change <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->.
It just really p****s me of that my computer can work fine for 2 months and then suddenly get heaps of problems! I would just like to know what actually went wrong which screwed it up so badly.... <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
And I can't do system restore because it's win98.....
Oh well. Seems to be working fine atm. Until I try to play NS......
it seems to fix most of any problem i ever have.
So I can't reformat because I can't get windows back. Also, We have a network connection set up, and if the hard-drive was formatted, I would have no idea how to get it back <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I had a mic, it was crap, but it worked over Voice Comm on half life. I went out and brought a headset, came back, plugged it in (no software or anything) and then the computer decided that hey, it just didn't want to run Voice Comm any more. In short, the sound drivers appear to have corrupted themselves. Or something.
It will randomly crash in a game of HL (normal problem, i know) but instead of just crashing to desktop, it will simply freeze the game. I can ctrl+alt+delete it, but then the screen goes all flickery, the resolution goes down to what can only be described as 100X100, and the colours mess up.
Randomly BSODs on start up.
On some reboots, it just won't run half life at all, requiring another restart
I got fed up with it about a week ago, and told the computer (yes, i speak to it) that i'm going to format it. I started putting all the things i wanted to keep in a folder to put on another computer on the network. It crashed half way through just getting some files into one folder. Ok, fine. Restarted, got it done, but then it decided that it didn't <b>want</b> to be formatted, and then wouldn't allow me to access the network (crashed).
My computer has a (split) Personality. And recently, my keyboard has stopped performing as it should. ctrl+c won't copy, and i can't use the arrow buttons to navigate pages. I think i must have some form of virus or something on here
It is supposed to be 1.1 Ghz, and for some strange reason, it wants to believe it is ~850 mhz.
Here is a list of weird querks my computer does:
Thinks it is ~850 Mhz when it is supposed to be 1.1 Ghz.
When I bring up the search box, windows wants to install components that it can't find (I have to hit cancel about 5 times).
Can run half-life, quake3, black & white with ease, but can't load 13 MB of mem required to play blood.
Occasionally, my computer will not boot up at all until I blow dust mites out of my computer (anybody else have this problem?).
No matter how many F@#$! times I remove quicktime, it reinstalls itself and onto the task bar.
God I hate quicktime!
So I can't reformat because I can't get windows back. My suggestion would be to find a trustworthy and competent computer-savy friend, wine him and dine him, and then beg him on hands and knees to fix your issues. Most of the ones listed are fixable, although a couple are very possibly results of failing hardware.
If we really need to, we can go through here and examine some of your issues line by line. But we will need a lot more info on your hardware and OS setup. And a better description of some of these symptoms (like the part where you have one processor and the computer reports another - is it listed wrong when the computer boots up? In msconfig? Somewhere else? That's often a voltage problem, for example)...
(Hope that doesn't set off the filters <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )
Rhuadin
Lets see, it wont let my brother access it even though it has no password (from his comp over network).
It randomly decides to crash Photo Shop 7 randomly <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I decides to change my fonts randomly <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
It also crashed while level editing (Serious Sam: The Second Encounter) several times.
It also got rid of my My Documents and IE icons <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Im running Windows 2000 Professional.
