Gf4 - System Memory In Pci Mode And Fps

<div class="IPBDescription">for the tech-minded folks around here</div> When I first got my new computer (athlon 2400, 512Mb RAM, GF4MX 400), I got a whopping 5fps in Medieval: Total War. The solution turned out to be turning down the setting for the amount of system memory used for textures in PCI mode in the GF4's properties to a quarter of its default value.

What I'm wondering is (a) why this works, when it looks to the untrained eye like the opposite way to do things, and (b) whether it's likely that this will improve performance in other games/applications.

I always keep this value at zero (using RivaTuner), because it fixed some issues with my tv-out, and the old Unreal single player game. I have yet to see an advantage by setting this at a high value.
