details inside.
Problem: Halflife/NS freezes a few minutes after I use my Voice comm.
I was oringally without a soundcard, and was using motherboard built in sound. I do a lot of downloading and I realize I could have had a virus.
Attempted Fixes:
Installed new drivers for video
Installed new drivers for sound
Installed new working sound card
Installed new working video card

*please note that it seemed to run fine as long as I did not use my mic to send any sound. I tried spliting the devies up and many different configs for my system sound.

Ran off of motherboard sound
Ran off of sound card sound
Shutdown all excess programs
Updated all Win XP drivers
Downloaded any updates I could find
Reinstalled HL and d/led new HL and NS exec files

FORMATED HDD's
Reinstalled XP

Bought new HD, formated, installed XP

D/led New HL exec, and new NS exec
Ran HL, still the same crash when trying to us the mic.

Now, I feel like total crap and want to cry...I just lost a years worth of data because I thought it would fix this problem. I am guessing its hardware related, but I have practically bought a new system.

Guys, I really need help here. Please, anything, suggestion, morale support....arg.

thanks,
Ben B.

NOTES: It was working fine until about 2 weeks ago. Now it has gotten progressivly worse. Planetside freezes now as well, but other games seem to run fine. Like I said, it is something to do with the mic, I am sure...or more exactly, the sending of my sound .wav's over the net.

ok, you say you can play for as long as you want so long as you don't use the mic?

ok, you post honestly isn't THAT clear so some Qs:

    1) make sure this is true (go play a few hours of NS and just DONT use it)
    2) This freez happened BEFORE all of your tweaks (new sound card, new vid card, new HDD etc)
    3) did you do a COMPLEATE reinstal, everytihng fresh:
reformat HDDs, reinstall XP, Re DL latest drivers for all, re dl all patches for XP (make SURE YOU DO THIS)
    4) I have heard of some errors with XP drivers trying to take over, have you made sure that your XP drivers for sound/vid are disabled and gone?
    5) Assuming you backed stuff up and then put it back on, have you a virus scanner? (if not use HouseCall, its free and online)
    6) why did you loose a years worth of data? (back up, back up, back up just for good safe pc practice mate)

    oh well
