For beginners Milkshap 3d maybe, then theres 3d studio max and maya. also <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=20223' target='_blank'>this </a> will help you out with any other questions about skining and modeling.

Well, presumably you don't want to be spending thousands on a program, so that limits you to Milkshape ($20), Maya PLE (free), and SoftImage XSI (also free). There are a couple of others, but those are the main ones.

Out of those I'd recommend Milkshape if you're a beginner, since it's a nice simple program compared to the others, and XSI if your monitor can do it (it requires a resolution higher than 1024x768) becasue that's what VALVe use.

I don't know about Maya PLE and SoftImage XSI, but I feel that 3DS Max is a great program to start off with, after you understand a nice bit of its featuers your models turn out very well. Even if you have to use GMAX and Milkshape to compile, still I suggest it.

Your Shure Softimage XSI is free?!?because otherwise everybody with avp2 would have it if it would be free.

If you dont want to spend thousands on 3ds Max, theres always G-Max, theres always the free, slightly-less-powerful-but-just-as-good modeller.... you can get it somewhere at www.discreet.com

    <a href='http://www.softimage.com/exp' target='_blank'>Yep.</a>

It's actually a limited version (XSI EXP) like Maya PLE, but it's nowhere near as restricted as PLE is.

Look here - it quite clearly rocks. If my computer was good enough I'd be using it.
