Reminded me of a great game called Wings of Fury on the Amiga. Anyone ever play that one?
In addition, when facing things that inherit speed (slime asteroids...) follow behind them at full throttle and plug them. Don't start missing or you'll either lose track of the roid (which is bad, especally if it's slime because it will regenerate and you'll have a full-size slime roid flying around) or smack into it (because you didn't give it enough speed by shooting it). Both can be fatal. As for the smart roids, they are cake. They are like ameobas, and will alter their course based on their life and where you are. If they have over 50% mass, they will try and maul you, if they have less then 50%, they will run. Thusly, they don't inherit as much momentium, and if you lose track of one, let it heal a bit and it will come after you itself!
Save your missles for the bosses. Yes, there are bosses.
