Now, you choose a nickname, and I think that's all that's required. Hit "Connect to IRC Server". A bunch of confusing stuff shows up, in different colors. Ignore that. A window will pop up, named "mIRC Channels Folder". No one's really in those channels, they're all in their own. If you want to be a regular IRC'er at a certain channel, click the "Add" button.
Let's use the Natural Selection channel for an example.
At the top, type in #naturalselection (all channels are marked with a # sign, at least, as far as I know). There is no password <i>I</i> know of. Description is optional--It's just a reminder to tell you. Then, hit OK.
Find #naturalselection on the list, double click on it (or hit "Join"), and you're in the channel. Chat freely, though usually about only 1/3 are the people in there are actually alive. Less.
Have fun in that channel, but be careful... No swearing, repeating, spamming... You know.
Also, there's a bunch of commands, like !rules and stuff. But I don't even know most of them, so I'm not going to talk.
Incidentally, I use Trillian instead, so I can't help you much more than this.

No, about IRC. Lol, imagine it about his face--
Notice the way he doesn't look forward, but off screen. He also has repulsive eyes. Why isn't he smiling?!

Much stronger scripting interface, none of the scriptkiddie 'IRC thug' crash-scripts work against it, and the ability to use both Perl and compiled C modules as plugins. Also comes with GamesNET in the default server list, IIRC. If not, just open it up and type in '/server irc.gamesnet.net', then '/join #naturalselection' to pop in the channel. Change your nickname with '/nick blahblahblah', if you don't like the defaults and can't be arsed to go through the preferences. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
