Most likely a internet scam thing, Dunno.
Windows XP is based on windows 2000

win xp PRO is based on 2000, win XP home is based on 98. Check task manager on both if you dont belive me.

and Its not a scam, hardware manufactureres cant dictate what OS you get, and if I dont want Microsoft I dont have to pay for it. I'm just looking for someone with the web addy of the site that helps people do this.

I don't see how this would ever work...

It's pretty well known what OS is packed along with the computer you buy.. since they don't force you to buy that computer than it's pretty much your fault for doing so...

Just wipe the sucker clean, and put 2k, XPPro, or a nice linux distro on that sucker.

I never touched xp home but I do believe they are both based on 2k (don't ask why I have pro I'll deny everything!)

I would highly doubt that two oses so close one another (once again I ignore all about xp home but I suppose it's close to pro) would be created from different bases and still released at the same time, same interface, same name, etc...

Yes OSs come bundeled, but you arent paying for the OS you are paying for the COA which you should be able to return. There are a few class action lawsuits on this topic, but I need that site to sighn on to one. Your car comes with Rims too, but if you dont want flashy rims you dont have to pay for them.

edit: I'm too lazy to look for the documentation from microsoft on win xp home, but if you access the task manager in home you can see that its identical to 98, you cant access process trees, you also dont have any managerial functions such as 'local users and groups' and 'shares' there is no access as far as Im aware of to Services, and you cant manage permissions. In Win XP Pro you can do all that and the Task Managers is exactly the same as win2k

um, they are both based on NT/2000 technology. The primary difference between XP home and XP pro is that home doesn't have a lot of the remote administration features that are only helpful in an office. I actually prefer XP home to XP pro because ( get this ) its a lot more secure. It turns out that the added features in pro are the things that have the security vulnerabilities that keep popping up.

Win XP Home is to WinXP Pro like WinME is to Win2k Pro.

I've personally found XP home to be a lot more stable than XP pro. I haven't had a crash since I got it. Its basically the same thing with fewer unnecessary features (ie fewer services to turn off).

I absolutely can't fault WinXP Home for your average user. The kind of person that actually buys a premade pc

It's simple to use and, well, works. But quite frankly if you want the extra features and controls, you should pay for your own professional copy. Or get linux up and running at least.

To put it bluntly, you get what you pay for. If it came "free" with the pc, then what else do you expect

What features have you found lacking in it? (BTW that WinME comparison was low man. WinME was the worst abortion of an operating system since 3.1 My GF had it on her computer, and of course I had to be the tech support guy. Completely asstastic.

Back off, buddy. Do NOT insult Windows 3.1. That was THE best OS EVER.

XP Home works fine on this computer, I never have any problems with it. I think the XP Home bashers just think anything intended for the "average" user is beneath their notice, frankly... in more than 10 months with this computer I haven't had a single critical problem with it, and my Win 98 computer chokes on a regular basis.
