Windows XP is based on windows 2000
and Its not a scam, hardware manufactureres cant dictate what OS you get, and if I dont want Microsoft I dont have to pay for it. I'm just looking for someone with the web addy of the site that helps people do this.
It's pretty well known what OS is packed along with the computer you buy.. since they don't force you to buy that computer than it's pretty much your fault for doing so...
Just wipe the sucker clean, and put 2k, XPPro, or a nice linux distro on that sucker.
I would highly doubt that two oses so close one another (once again I ignore all about xp home but I suppose it's close to pro) would be created from different bases and still released at the same time, same interface, same name, etc...
edit: I'm too lazy to look for the documentation from microsoft on win xp home, but if you access the task manager in home you can see that its identical to 98, you cant access process trees, you also dont have any managerial functions such as 'local users and groups' and 'shares' there is no access as far as Im aware of to Services, and you cant manage permissions. In Win XP Pro you can do all that and the Task Managers is exactly the same as win2k

um, they are both based on NT/2000 technology. The primary difference between XP home and XP pro is that home doesn't have a lot of the remote administration features that are only helpful in an office. I actually prefer XP home to XP pro because ( get this ) its a lot more secure. It turns out that the added features in pro are the things that have the security vulnerabilities that keep popping up.

*waits for games that REQUIRE winXP to come and smack him on the head*
It's simple to use and, well, works. But quite frankly if you want the extra features and controls, you should pay for your own professional copy. Or get linux up and running at least.
To put it bluntly, you get what you pay for. If it came "free" with the pc, then what else do you expect
Back off, buddy. Do NOT insult Windows 3.1. That was THE best OS EVER.
