Box-art for ns
Some time ago someone posted a topic about a "box-art-contest" in the General-forum.
When I read the article, I began to create my idea of the
boxart. Unfortunatly I got ill and went in hospital for a week, but know I'm home again and I've finished that:

Apart from some minor spelling and grammar errors (which are easily forgiven), I think that's an absolutely amazing job. One aesthetic consideration that I have to offer is that I don't think white goes too well with NS. I think that if you grunged that up a bit by throwing in some samples of the textures, it'd be just about perfect.

WOW

Incredible work! The idea for the very front of the box, it's brilliant, I applaud you! Nothing else could capture the true idea of "Natural Selection" than that portrayal of the evolution of the alien species. Bear in mind though that if it were a contest, you'd lose marks for spelling and punctuation (I'm an english freak, rob can attest to that). I only hope that more people will follow your lead and create similarily stunning works of art! This is a hint of what the future has in store for us, I have no doubt.

Maybe you should reverse the order of the aliens on the front of the box, with to the left and to the right.

Right now you get a feeling of de-evolution as most people read from left to right.

RhoadsToNowhere: Sorry for the grammar and spelling, but if anyone can correct the mistakes (I'm german and i don't want to ask my teacher)I'll correct them...
I like the clean white, but I'll give it a try and test some texture.

Neag: Yes, I think i had tried it at first but i don't remeber why i changed it, something looked odd...

I agree that the white/black contrast works well for the presentation. But yes, I also noticed some minor discrepancies.... since this isn't a design for use as a REAL game box, though, they can be forgiven.

Reminds me of Black And White.

Personally, I'd go with green infestation on the alien side, and maybe blue metal plating on the marine side.

This is the new Front-Cover version.
I tried to made the white a bit more "worn out" and I reversed the order of the aliens.
I find the "Development"-mistake when I uploaded the image and I'm to lazy to correct it right now.
please tell me what version of the front you like more...

Actually, if done correctly, that would look incredibly good. Gives some other people some good ideas I suppose.

Are we gonna have a contest or something? I think that would be a good idea! While I'm on the subject of contests again, we should do another Flaytona! Those were good times.

That is very impressive!

I personally think the first attempt is better, both how it's "white white" and how it starts with Tiny and ends with Bob. Though that might just be me.

I don't think you have to worry to much about spelling, even XTS here did a few in this thread. (English, similarly) If this were to be used you could just ask us to point them all out.

Yeh, I enjoyed the first one better. This is really amazing work -- how did you do it? Did you create a box in a modeling program then skin it?

OMG both of those are incredible!, Seroisly, i love em, and plague, add like some type of alien building on the front, or the level 5's head, make it inimdating, otherwise, freakin awesome!

i think they both look really fine. However, i think the first one (the totally white one from Ramses) would look best for an NS box.

Maybe you should focus a bit more on the cd itself, because -maybe- ns is not only going to be downloaded, but also going to be released with a gaming magazine, so people who have crappy internet can buy it and the magazine gets more customers...

Then the cd would need a cover...

I saw ramses, which i like only the green in the middle looks a bit out of place. That would be white/transparent too and it would be perfect.

All three look amazing something that could be changed on the second to make it look better would be to remove the plain white around the aliens so that the texture affects them too.

Plague: You could've picked some better screenshots, although your front cover is more following the HL 'theme' than Rams.

Now i'm waiting to see one that really follows the HL 'theme', you know, plain cover with the hl logo embossed and a single figure standing beside it... (HL had Gordon, Opfor had adrian, BS has Barney and CS has a counter terrorist I think.)

Here's just a few things that caught my eye.

Spell these without capitalizing them. (unless they're the first word in the sentence, of course)

modification
tactics
unknown
threatens (instead of "threats the outposts")
marines
threat (the last word)

I don't know, maybe you could write something along the lines of this instead of the paragraph that starts with "Command".

"As a commander you can order a squad of marines around while supporting them with defensive structures. Build turrets and siege cannons, give your marines ammo and health packs while you’re planning an offensive to win the game."

I look forward too anything else you can turn up, Ramses!

The ironic thing is that a marketing department would likely rejct it. Those are really good, Ramses, I espically like your style and the evoultionary chain idea. Heck all the boxes are good. Maybe we could have a "collectable NS boxs made by fans" thing going on when NS goes retail.

P.S.: My Webspace is nearly full... Can anyone tell me some good free-service that allow image-linking (so NOT geocities, i know the .txt trick but that doesn't work on every site)?

Wow, these are really great. I think Plague's hits the marketing nail on the head, with the prominently-placed HL lambda symbol. I think I'd rather have a more understated front box art (mostly black, or shadows, or an otherwise more minimalist design) but the infestation is great. The back of the box really sums up the game as well. Marines, aliens, and commander mode. I think I'd use a shot of the level 1 to highlight the difference between the sides.

I also think it would be cool to show all 5 aliens on the back, and to highlight their movement styles and abilities, to show people the kind of diversity that each side offers.

Really wonderful stuff guys, makes me all excited to get NS out to you and see what the response is!

My vote would be the pure white box front, with the aliens "evolving" from Bob --> Tiny (as opposed to Tiny --> Bob). Then make a large "watermark" (light grey, partially transparent behind the aliens) of the Halflife lambda symbol. Other than that, I think the original design is flawless. (:

Are you basing the black "fire" effect to your sig. If you are, don't you think you're taking a bit too much from it.
