Genuine company, or evil scam?
I've never used any service remotely like this, but here's the email they sent me (twice) today. Their website looks pretty genuine, but since they have no reason to be contacting me and I've never heard of them I'm curious if this is an evil credit card fraud thing that I should report to my ISP or not.

(It's the "restriction or removal" part that makes me suspicious, a kind of "do this now ... or else!" to make people fill it in without thinking)

    So I tried logging in to nochex.com using the email address they sent that to. The first email seems to be dodgy as sin then.

    Contact your England FBI Equivilent and have these people thrown to jail for a very long time, as no doubt this is a scam and no doubt many many stupid people handed over their credit cards without thinking twice

    Indeed. Asking for your card number... Without you even knowing that you "had" an account there...

    Good trick though... Personally, I'd never give away my credit card number in such a form... To just "verify" my account creation or usage...

    Also this webiste may be legit if only b/c it may be located the "company address" or the company server may be based out of a part of the globe where foreign statues and powers have no real legal jurisdiction.

    Example. If Internet gambling were illegal in britian for instance, the gambling servers could move to africa or some place where its legal and operate from there. The company then cant be held accountable if some one from another country "stumbles" into the site.

    Well, the police and trading standards office have been emailed, but since it's 10pm here it'll not be til tomorrow at the earliest I get a response. I also wrote to NOCHEX about it, figuring if they're a genuine company they might like to know that someone's using their name for such purposes.

    CID is the UK equivilant of the FBI. It's the Criminal Intelligence Department.

    P.c's = regular everyday cops

    So did these guys ever call you back or did you find out anything?
  • MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
    Police said nothing, trading standards said that the company was genuine and seemed to miss the point a little, NOCHEX said that bogey wasn't one of theirs.

    Sounds like either an error with their email service, or a clever con man. Nochex is real though.

    *signs you up for 1000's of spam lists*

  • MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
    I refer you to my previous post, where I said it wasn't one of their emails.
