New Computer Needs A Bit Of Tweaking

<div class="IPBDescription">any pointers?</div> Not sure if this is the best place for this, but it was a toss-up between here and tech support.

I've recently got my mitts on a spangly new computer. Specs:

AMD Athlon 2400, 512Mb RAM, GF4MX 400 (blech, but it was cheap), XP Home ... well, those give you an idea of the general spec, without me having to go double-check things I'm not sure of.

The trouble is, although it's a lot faster than my old rustbucket computer, it doesn't seem to be performing like the ubercomputer it should be (as in I'm getting under 50 fps in games whose recomended spec is around 600MHz). Any links to decent tweaking guides, or other fixes &c you could suggest would be most welcome. I'm using 44.03 dets, though I haven't yet put DX9 on which might help a smidge.

    what game was it? theres a chance your low-end mediocre video card was tha fault of the 50 fps. not that 50 fps is bad.... NS is the only place where 100 fps actually helps you play.

    Well, the only games I've tried it with have been <i>Deus Ex, Giants: Citizen Kabuto[i], and [i]Z: Steel Soldiers</i>.

    On a slightly upsetting side note, I can't get the ****'s modem to give me anything better than 1000 ping, so I'm stuck with the rustbucket for HL mods <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
