Game Crashing...

First, let me state I searched the forum and didnt find any post that answered my question.

So since I moved back home for the summer from college, I have had problems playing NS. I use DSL at home.

So this is what I do and what happens. I start CD, then I open NS, everything loads fine. I go to intenet games, and update the list with out a problem at all. But when I go join a server, the black screen that says loading pops up and then like a second after it says loading I hear a sound, simualar to the windows error sound. Then nothing happens and I have to hit esc and once I do it takes me all the way out of the game to my desktop.

I have tried it even without loading CD first. So I assume that isnt the problem.

Does anyone have and solutions?

Thanks and enjoy playing NS while I cant right now. Im just not sure if I need to reinstall and I dont want to if I dont have to.

This goes in the tech support forum, but I expect a mod will move it there shortly, so I'll just start answering now.

Is the computer you're using at home the same as the one you used at school? Has *anything* changed except for the physical location and Net connection?

Have you closed all other applications before starting up Half-Life? Do other mods work? Does single-player work? Have you tried going into a lower video mode? Rebooting?

    If all else fails, reinstall.

First sorry about the wrong forum.

Secondly, I never tried HL single player to see if I get the same error and I do. I dont understand why, everything is the same on my comp besides the differnt net connection and physical location. I guess Ill try a clean install of HL tomorrow and see what happens.

    Thanks for the help.

skip that either do a nice good scan disk/ defrag and rid of any spy ware or any junk, still have the problem just go ahead and do a fresh install. this is what i do, i leave a 4 gig partition on my 20 gig w/ windows and small apps like winamp and messenger's. partition the rest and put all my games on that part. plus my 80 gig has all stuff on it. i keep that 16 gig portion defragged and clean at all times for my games. put windows on the 4 gig part or whatever you decide on just dont forget about the fact there needs to be room for swap space. now go ahead and do a reinstall of windows on that partition. partitioning is very easy in windows xp setup---- so any time you feel windows is too bogged down or not working right you can go ahead and do a fresh install. another fact, you dont need to reinstall half life everytime if you do this just insert the key when prompted if you leave it on a different drive and it will save the reg data --------------this is a nice clean way of doing things
