    eh, sorta illy

You will knowtice alot of them have won ID as 'unkown' or something impossible

making a master ban list from this iwll probably just end up banning alot of innocent people and have the others laugh at you.

I am glad that I stoped testing cheats out (I heard that people stared putting actual trojans in them, no surprise there) or else would have probably ended up there

I dunno, this does seem like it may not work out. I'm not for black lists to be honest.
  • JowerJower Join Date: 2003-02-12 Member: 13448Members
If they're proven to be repeating cheaters im all for a black list
But just anyone who ever tried out a aimbot ?
    Right

If nothing else it would help to know who to look for in games...then it could be easier for the Servers admins to ban people after they can confirm that the person is cheating.

    or

they were screwing around on their ownserver and wanted to try out some cheats

You can pretty easily look at the wonid's and server IPs to see if that's the case.

Beautiful. They should have left it going a while longer.

    EDIT: "Obviously cheated"
Huh? This is auto-logged when they use the trojan-equipped cheat. Doesn't need to be obvious.

To be honest, the person(s) who infected "cheaters" with trojans are no better than the cheaters themselves. What they did was a double wrong and does not make anything right ...

The trojan didn't do any damage to the person's computer, it simply logged when/where they used it. The person that wrote the cheat works for a league. The league used the list to monitor the cheat's usage on match night. I believe 18 or 19 people were busted. Great job I say!

I mean k try cheats once, or cheat becuz u like to cheat on ur own, but do not go freaking up clan wars and showing off how "good" u are.

I have never cheated or tried cheating and almost never seen/detected a cheater so I dont really care about this stuff but this is pretty kewl <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I think they should put a trojan in every cheat that is created and then have a warning text saying that if you use the cheat you will be blacklisted. That way if you use the cheat you know the downsides of it.

    [serious]Don't take this too serious[/serious]

Hmm.. actually might be a good idea... create suspicion among cheaters! I remember someone joining a cheat writing team and causing them to break up from inside... could work something like it!

What the cheat author did in this case is called a "HoneyPot." It's a commonly used technique in network security to detect and control hackers (the real ones, not game cheaters).

What is usually done is to put up a server that is vulnerable, and give it an "attractive" name (like "credit authorization server", or "giant box of cool pr0n") It's not actually part of your internal network, and doesn't contain any actual important data.

Then the network folk sit back and watch the server. When people break into it, their IDs and processes are recorded, and the actual network can be hardened against that hacker and the method they used to gain entrance.

Same thing here. They created a HoneyPot cheat and tracked who it was who used it so that the rest of us can harden our servers against the cheaters.

Now if we could only get VAC to publish a website of known cheaters...

I would have hoped they didn't tell it to the public and continue catching people off guard <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Firstly, this is NOT entrapment. Nobody MADE them download these cheats - so anyone attempting to establish that is crazy.
Secondly, this sent their wonid, the server they were playing on, the people in that server and time back. The admins know EXACTLY what was happening at the time the hack was used.
People with the WONID 'unknown' were using it on a LAN. Therefore these are innocent imo.
What the UKTFCL and CTFCL admins are doing (ETAC leagues who helped make this) is looking for people who were clearly not just "trying it out" once, but were recorded using it multiple times on multiple servers, and banning them.

I am pretty sure that the trojan is contained in the cheat itself, and isn't a separate piece of software that the cheat installs. The term trojan is used in a very broad sense in this case. It is a "hidden" feature that reports the usage of the software. Spyware might be a better term for it...which we all know (too damn well) is currently legal.
