What Fps Do You Get In Comm Mode?

Normaly when i'm runing around in first person view, (alien or rine) i get over 100 fps, but as soon as i hop into the comm chair, my fps drops down to 30-40. While the human eye doesn't really notice anything above 30 fps, it's kind of a bummer to tag along with such a low number, considering the game's engine is over five years old. Then again it might just be because the engine wasn't really designed for something like this, anybody know of a viable explanation here?

    first as a prelude to the scientific research crap people are gonna pelt you with, the human eye can distinguish well above 30 fps, things look much much smoother at 100fps than 30.
    Yeah i usually get 100 fps too but in comm mode it dips by 20 frames or so constantly and when there is a lot of activity (phase gates are a killer) it drops to 50-60. Not really a complaint, just an obvservation since it doesnt much matter what kind of fps you get when you're commanding and i'm usually too busy to notice anyways.

    I get anywhere from 60-100 normally and about 20-30ish in comm mode. doesn't bother me too much. How do you guys get over 100 fps though? I thought the limit in HL was 100? Even if you put fps max 500 it always stops at 100 for me even when I'm just in console between rounds.

    I don't remember mentioning getting over 100fps and i didn't see it in his post either but yeah the cap for HL engine is 100

    Yep, I get constant 98-100 FPS in first person but commander mode drops me to 60-70. Kinda sucks that you notice your FPS dropping, but in comm mode... theres nothing that it really hinders IMO. It just irks me anytime my FPS is under 98 since I'm used to the 3 digits...

    I get 30 in normal and 15 in commander mode. Still I win most of my games and without a mic.

    it's funny, I have a great box with a nice card, and I had crap fps, crashed my box, reinstalled had killer fps, crashed, reinstalled and now my fps is crap again <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    (the crashes were my fault, ran something wrong while I slept and when I woke up, my my far too late)

    Talking about your rig, Silver, or has the 1.1 PTing started?
    Mmmm... it'd be nice if it were the latter. Get rid of the Comm pointer-lag that I end up with, even having a decent framerate.

    ok for a start u should set fps_max and fps_modem both to 70 , in HL u can get as many FPS as ur computer can do but net graph will onyl show up to 99, timer_refresh shows ur real FPS. if u like net graph showing ur FPS use net_graph 3 and it uses less CPU and will increase ur FPS
    i get 60-100 in game and 40 in comm mode

    Hmm... around 5-10. Which is why I've not commanded yet, despite having been playing since the day after release. The only times I've stepped into the chair have been to drop emergency equipment like IPs when we relocate.

    around 5 -10 aswell, that's why I never comm. It's really unplayable. Then again after playing NS for an hour or so i end up with red and sore eyes. Oh well, new computer in just a couple of months

    i think the FPS drops as a commander because from that view the visibility optimization of the engine won't work. i'm talking about the optimization that prevents rendering work being done on surfaces of the map which can't possibly be seen from certain locations inside the map, and the commander view is outside the map so it can't use that optimization.

    iirc, fps_modem is obsolete (due to the "new network code", that was introduced a while ago now). It would communicate with the server x frames a second, so even if you were getting 100fps you might only be sending and recieving data from the server one third of that.
