Worst Disease Contest

<div class="IPBDescription">For comparison</div> My friend and I while searching the interweb decided to look up diseases, we decided that the Ebola virus is the worst one we could find. All the info is from <a href='http://www.medical-dictionary.com' target='_blank'>http://www.medical-dictionary.com</a> and reads:

"ebola virus
<virology> An epidemic viral illness seen in southern Sudan and Zaire, caused by the Ebola virus. The illness is characterised by fever, malaise, muscle aches, respiratory symptoms, diarrhoea, vomiting, epistaxis, haemoptysis, haematemesis, rash, tremors and subconjunctival haemorrhages. Transmitted by close bodily contact with infected individuals (blood, faeces and body fluids). Incubation is-21 days with initial symptoms of fever and headache. There is no specific treatment and death can occur within 10 days. "

Now basically that means that you bleed everywhere and have a horrible, horrible time.

Now what i want to know, is there any other diseases out there that would top this? If you can find one post it here and we will all compare.

Saw some disease that basically ate away your flesh. It would land on a certain spot and gnaw your flesh down to the bone at that area. Although they managed to destroy it at the area where it was happening, it still runs rampant in Africa. I forgot the name of it.

Yeah but that isn't a slowly suffering demise. I forgot to mention that once the disease is done with the area it's been feeding off of, it moves to another area.....

That would either be classified as a flesh eating virus/bacteria or lepresy. Not quite sure on the specifics of lepresy, but it is a nasty mofo. Causes skin to first turn leathery, then blacken and eventually decay. Have heard those inflicted with it referred to as the living dead.

Surprised noone has mentioned the Beubonic Plague (Black death).

spinal menengites, just aint fun, and you all have a chance of getting it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (as opposed to black plauge, ebola etc)

actualy one of the worst parts of Lepracy is that you can die of simple cuts

You loose alot of nerve function (I believE) and thus have a tendancy ot simply over look wounds, I think you also have lowered resistances and also you simply don't heal as well.

I would have to vote for ebola too, we may not ever get it, but its the nastiest one I can think of... Liquifies organs and causes you to bleed them out of every orifice... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Nasty

And lepracy I beleve is a genetic disease that causes the body to decay faster than it should and prevents your body from fighting the decay. So basically you just fall apart. Can't say that it would be an enjoyable experience.

Surprised nobody has mentioned HIV/AIDS. AIDS is horrific! You don't directly die from it but it nutralizes your immune system meaning you get multiple illnesses like cancers, TB, Pnemonia ect.. And you can be ill for years aswell!

To be quite honest I'd rather die in 10 days from the ebola virus than catch HIV and have it progress to AIDS.

This isn't a disease, but pretty gruesome, an it's a fitting punishment for being stupid

Basically, you've all seen those pressure sprayers that people use to paint things..right?

if you get to close, (about an inch) to the tip when it is spraying, it can actually inject paint into your skin, and it gangreens virtually over night, the only way to stop it is to fillet your flesh off layer by layer. not fun
I have a friend who is a painter, and he told me about it, still gives me the heebie jeebes

Sadly, there's no worse disease than good ol'-fashioned Stupidity.

The level of contagiousness is dependent on the initial host - the more influential the host is with surrounding potential hosts, the easier Stupidity will spread. If Stupidity is encountered in a fairly dormant (<i>ie: quiet and/or shy</i>) host, its chance to propagate to another potential host is limited.

Stupidity can be spread in numerous ways. The most common ways are being in close proximity to one who is engaged in verbal communication, or by passing the disease on any number of mediums through characters, letters, symbols, and/or diagrams.

The humanoid classification of "intellectual" has a slightly higher immunity to Stupidity, as lengthy words with no obvious definition and complex diagrams seem to repress the disease quite effectively. Dull monotone professors help oppose the disease by lowering a potential host's ability to comprehend the characters, letters, symbols, and/or diagrams on which Stupidity may reside.

Possible side effects of the disease may include unintelligible communication, indecisiveness in ordinarily common situations, the desire to do unwise things, and the eager willingness to post previously suggested ideas in the Natural Selection™ "Suggestions & Ideas" forum.

At this point in time, there is no known cure for Stupidity. Fortunately, due to the countless hours of research by a team of highly-intelligent monkeys, we have discovered several preventative measures to counter this terrible disease.

The first, and most important, measure is "read the frickin' FAQ". This alone has help repress the level of contagion in numerous hosts, as well as preventing the disease from spreading.

Secondly, bananas are yummy. We are unsure as to the veracity of this preventative measure, but our lead research monkey, Dr. Pooponanoob, assures us it is valid. Our validating team of researchers has yet to find any flaw in this pronouncement, so we will assume it is beneficial.

And finally: use letters for english words, not numbers or symbols. Stupidity is more likely to be transmitted in a format that requires conscious deciphering, as the human mind is more vulnerable when actively processing the infected statement.

In a state of high-stress, such as in military combat or attempting to bite the hide off a humanoid, the ability to transfer Stupidity through an encrypted message is greatly reduced. Our researchers insist that this is due to disease suppression from other factors - adrenaline, higher-priority situations, and banana rations.

Ahem, the point of this post is for you guys to explain which each disease does, some of you have done this, but others are just naming off diseases, saying this one is worse...

And i think ebola is still the worst, lepracy is bad, but can be treated, however if you contract ebola, your as good as dead.

I will also say getting AIDS/HIV is bad because you'll just eventually die of the common cold or somethign stupid like that.

Thansal got the closest to defining leprosy basically
Not much is really known about it but the symptoms are quite clear

If say you had leprosy you lose some of your nerve functions so you have to check your self regularly for cut abrasions etc. because you can’t feel it and you body resistance to disease dose not kick in as well
So if not careful your limbs or body in fact can rot away with out you knowing it resulting limbs falling of or surgical removal so you have to keep on checking for that all the time.

it depends on how you define the worst disease. if you mean the most .. how can i say it .. disguisting disease, you can take some of the Ebola type diseases. bleeding and vomiting and all that.
But you can also look at it the other way.
Maybe a diease which doesn't hurt your flesh at all can be worse ? let's say, a nurve disease which makes you feel non-stop horrible pain. you know that the pain doesn't come from damaged tissue like on the Ebola case, but from the nurves themselves. i hope things like that doesn't exist, and i hope more that no one will ever try to create it. it'll be, like, the perfect torturing tool.

now THAT'S the worst kind of disease i can think of.

The worst disease is a form of demitia that causes self canniblism. I look up the name in a minute. But basically, its a brain disorder that goes you to eat your own flesh. Suffers eat their extremeties, and limbs till they are a quadrapled. However if the patient is caught early enough they are properly restrained. Then they spend the following 5+ years till there death eating there gums, swallowing there teeth. Then they knaw there hard palate and then the soft palate. Basically if they are caught before they eat themselves, and restrained they run the bottom and the top of there mouth together to peel away skin and tissue, effectively eating thier faces from the insides out.

You cant catch this. Its a dementia, partly hereditary (as in family with cases are more at risk), but mainly environmental.

    ohh and its very rare.

But yeh i ebola kills you quick, its better than slowly consuming yourself till you die.

Actually, that theoretical disease sounds like it could come from platapus venom. They have spikes in thier hind legs that contains venom that specifically target pain receptors. The wound itself probably wouldnt ever kill you, but the severe pain being caused by the venom would certainly lead you to beleve so... There have only been a couple documented occurances of people being "stung" by a platapus, the most recent happened about 6+ years ago I beleve. The pain that poor fisherman endured lasted for months, only dulled, not alieved, by injecting strong painkillers into the larger nerve in his wrist (he was hit in the hand.)

Saw this story on Animal Planet when they did a special on venomous critters.

Hmmmmmm, that does sound like quite the ghastly disease. But I don't know, the horrible pain of having your insides liquify into blood and then basically puking it all up would be horrible for the 10 days... at least with this demitia, you would be enjoying it.

Im surprised no one has mentioned SARS yet either

    Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

all the way in HK where i am... quite horrible... they are quarintining ppl in their buildings... 6 hundred something ppl have it already and 15 have died....

it is spreading throughout the world.. and im wondering if ny1 here has heard about it??
  • SpceM0nkeySpceM0nkey Join Date: 2003-01-19 Member: 12480Members
see we are talking about worst diseases.

thats why no sars. I am sure its scary, but it aint ebola.

Speaking of which lets have a context.

In australia, one case of sars- no deaths
In australia, 6000 deaths per winter from influenzia (the common flu)

I am sure the Hong Kong statistics are in the same or similar proportions.
So dont sti back and passively watch the media. And dont run around scared. Take precautions, but also take perspective.

There is some disease, but it's in the genes of a person, not a bacteria or virus, so don't worry about catching it... And it doesn't really make your nerves hurt constantly, it really just makes your pain receptors incredibly more sensitive... In the beginning, it might only be a single receptor that has the disease. But then it can spread to the rest of the body...
****. I don't remember that good at all. Suffice to say, the woman on TV hurt like hell, yet still had 2 kids and a decent job. ...Interestingely enough, she said (after being asked :O)that during sex, the pain was greatly reduced.
  • MarocMaroc Join Date: 2002-08-31 Member: 1255Members
SARS is spreading here in Canada too, I live near toronto, about 75km away, and we already have a few cases out here. In Toronto, there are 2 hospitals completely quarintined, a school and there are about 100 people quarintined inside their homes. All the hospitals in the area, even where i live, are taking extreme precautions, like only allowing visitors in if they have family in the hospital, but the have to wear masks, and only allowing people with nothing less than, i dunno, a gunshot wound into the ER. I have heard talk about them shutting down all the schools in the area in order to control the spread... its pretty crazy... but really unless your really old, really young or weak, all your going to get is sick, your not going to die.

Now back to the regular topic... can nothing beat ebola?
