Alien Questions

I was wondering if somebody could help me with the attacks of the aliens. Some of them are pretty obvious, but some aint. Here are the ones I'm havin trouble with:

Skulk: Weapon number 2 - What's it do?
Gorge: Web - How to get it working?
Weapon number 4 - ... Decoys?
Lerk: Umbra/Spores - The difference?
Fade: Blink - The point, and how to get it workin? Do I really have to jump?
Onos: Charge thingy - Erm.. this is better than weapon num 1... why?
Roar - What's it do?

Skulk weap 2 = parasite.
It's a ranged attack. Hit a marine with a parasite and every alien will see him on his HUD until he dies. You can mark buildings too but don't overdo it. Parasite every marine you can. It's a death sentence.

Gorge web:
Shoot at a wall, then shoot at the opposite wall. THere can't be any obstacles between these 2 spots.

Gorge weapon number 4 = babblers:
They're like snarks in HL, dumb but can cover skulks

Lerk:
Umbra:
Appears on the lerk and protects every alien inside it from bullets. Some bullets will hit you but you shouldn't die because of bullets. Beware of grenades and knives
Spores:
Makes a green cloud at your crosshair. Deals damage to every marine inside it.

Fade blink:
Aim a little higher, jump, duck, then hit fire. It teleports you at the place you're aiming at.

Onos: Charge:
Deals massive damage to everything that touches the onos, but costs you a full energy bar.

.... Snarks?? I got Half-Life for CS . I've played 2 or 3 times in boot camp to check things out, and I started the SP last night (so far I've killed that tentacle thing..). You'll have to be a bit more descriptive on this 'snark' thing.

As for the web, how do I know when it's working? I've tried it several times, and there's nothing between the two points I shot at.

What about roar? I really really like the Onos (although I'm pretty addicted to the wall climbing with the Skulk ), and I'd like to use his weapons as best as possible.

Aah you mean roar = primal scream!
It boosts yourself and all your nearby teammates like mad for a certain amount of time. Fades can shoot acid rockets at a machine gun rate.

If you webbed correctly, cou can see the web between the two points. There must have been an obstacle between your points.

Snarks = little aliens you can throw that will attack your enemies then explode. But when you're a gorge, you can spawn skulk-like creatures: babblers. They are really DUMB but if there are many of them they can annoy marines who won't know if that thing running on them is a babbler or a real skulk. THey're useful to attack structures when you're a gorge too.

Sometimes with blink you don't have to jump... I've blinked without jumping...

It's more advisable to jump, though. Less chance of getting stuck in the floor (like I was once).

I think I can tell when there's somthing between two plain vertical walls or not. Unless ofcourse virtual air gets in the way.

It will boost you and your teammates who are nearby. Your energy will recharge much faster, you can bite twice as fast and run much faster.

Set hud_fastswitch 0. When the weapon HUD is open for a particular weapon (there's only one weapon per slot) you get a description telling you what the weapon does. I usually use hud_fastswitch 1, but I deliberately left it off for the first few weeks that I played NS so that I could learn what the different attacks do.

Edit: about blink. Blinking is a whole bible in itself, and at present blinking effectively is a skill (or perhaps even an art). This may change in later patches. Anyways, there are quite a lot of posts on blink lerking (heh... sorry) around the forums.

The two basic principles are:
1: The HEAD of the fade will appear where the crosshairs point. This explains why blinking is more effective duckjumping - your fade is a smaller profile and hour head is lower, so when you blink pointing at the middle of the wall your head arrives there and there's still room for your body because you've tucked your legs in (so to speak). Usually, if you just point down a corridor (aiming at the middle of the wall) it won't work, because that would put your head there and your legs through the floor.
2: If any part of your body does actually stick through something (like a floor) you will get stuck. Blink will only stop you from getting stuck in the wall if the outside of the wall is out of the level; you can get stuck in a horizontal ceiling beam which is thinner than you are by blinking at the ceiling above it - your body gets stuck in the beam and you can't move. You'll also get stuck if you aim at a lift floor.

No ****!! The problem isn't that I can't see the web, the problem is that it aint there to be seen!

This is another aspect of the aliens.

Whne you have one hive you have weapons 1 and 2, when you get 2 hives, you get weapon 3 and weapon 4 with 3 hives. When you have no hives you only have weapon 1
• SinkaroSinkaro Join Date: 2003-03-26 Member: 14886Members
.......... Tell me somthing I don't know!! That has absolutely nothing to do with the webs other than availability!!!!!
• Malicious_DubMalicious_Dub Join Date: 2002-12-21 Member: 11279Members, Constellation
Webs have to be shot twice to make a web and the web connects the two points you shot at though they can't be too far apart.
• BeRzErKeRBeRzErKeR Join Date: 2003-02-18 Member: 13691Members
For blink, I suggest you crouch-jump and then blink, then It'll work better.

And webs don't seem to work (I mean, it won't make new ones) when the hivesight is on (i.e. when your friends glow transparently). If the web still doesn't work then you probably have reached the maximum number of them.

There is a known bug with webs. If you create webs with your 'flashlight' on (which makes alien players and structures glow), they won't be visible.

Thats the only thing I can think of to explain your problem if your webbing correctly.

I think the max number of webs is 300, not too sure about that.

[sarcasm]Firestorm says its way less so...

300 - way less = max number of webs. Hoorah!! [/sarcasm]

Not sure were I got that number from TBH. Just popped into my head from somewhere when I thought about it. About 100 ?

300? no way it's less... much less.

Try shooting a web over a short distance, like 2 points on the floor in front of you rather than from floor to ceiling in the largest room in the map. Webs do not work over long distances, but you should see a white strand appear between the two places you fired at.

And a word of advice: people are trying to help you out here. Some of their explanations may not be precise because for many English is not their first language. Getting sarcastic or irate at their replies isn't particularly smart.

There are also plenty of topics in the various forums that explain things like Blink and webs. The search button is your friend.

for example, let's say you're webbing in a vent. You'll shoot one web on one side of the vent, then the next one on the other. Sometimes the vent isn't perfectly flat, and there will be either the vent that sticks out (I'm thinking of mother interface on nancy if you see where that is) or the vent is slanted.

Or maybe it's just a really small obstacle... for example around a corner? like a step on the ground?

as it has been said, pop on your hive sight, you'll see the webs like glowing white.

Bite me.

And I'm not the one who got sarcastic, so step off!

Edit: I finally figured out the problem. A real kick in the head... I had already heard about the Gorge's ability to spin webs when I first started playing, however I didn't pay much attention to certain things previously seen, and..... Well basicly, I thought health spray was the web (since it looked more web-like) and web was health spray (cuz it didn't...), and I kept using health spray to try and spin webs..... Obviously it didn't do a very good job.

..... I don't suppose this is a common mistake?

You won't make many friends round here if you go around telling people to starstarstarstar off. I suggest you learn to determine if something is a joke or an insult. And if it IS an insult, don't insult back. Instead make an overly long and incredibly sarcastic, yet meaningless, reply just like this one. Thankyou for your co-operation.

Sinkaro, listen carefully:
1. Select the web attack.
2. Point at a flat surface and fire. A small green glob will hit that point.
3. Then, point at a different flat surface a couple of feet away, eg either side of a door frame and shoot another glob there.
4. If the two points are close enough, and there are no obsticals in the way, a semi-transparant line will appear, this is the web.

oops all those people posted while I was writing that.

Word for the wise, having friends in this game will mean more victories because people will work with you. If they think you are a starstarstarstar they will watch you die for laughs. If they like you, however, you can be sure they will try they hardest to stop that skulk biting your legs off.
