How Long Will The War Last?

1) Short, like the Gulf War/kosovo?
2) Medium
3) Long and harsh, like the Vietnam War

I'm afraid that it will be a (3)

The Iraquis aren't nearly as dedicated to defending their country as the Vietnamese were. It won't be a week long, like some people are predicting, but it probably won't last 10 years either.

It will last as long as it benefits the interests of George W. Bush and/or the current US administration.

I'm not even going to go into whether I think those interests are moral, or justified, or if they coincide with the interests of the rest of the country or world. Whether they are any of these things or not is irrelevant: the fact remains that:

    1. the moment the war stops promoting his interests, Bush (for good reason) will want to stop it.
    2. whether this stop will be/should be through a final strike or simple withdrawal is still not certain yet
    3. by virtue of sheer unpredictability, the aftermath of a war of any length can and very likely will be a more dangerous time for the world than during wartime itself.

And making half of the UN mad by going to war is supporting his interests? This war is not supporting his interests.
I think he is doing the right thing.

This is nto vietnam or WW2, this is an entirely different war. This war is is not an infantry war, it is a prescion bombing raid. There will not be a draft. This war will be medium in lenght probably too.

You're right, it's not a war, it's an invasion. Those Iraqi soldiers are nothing to do with the problem, which is why it's extremely sad that they're gonna get completely plastered.

They can't win a conflict with air power only though.
  • BurrBurr Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9358Members
Air power will be the majority of the war, then the marines or special ops or something like that will go in and mop up the remains...

Well, veitnam was the way it was because it was a political war and we were being trained to fight the USSR
in a large battle, not some small gurrilla war in the jungle. Also some other factors caused it to be the way
    it was.

    Edit
Also, the goal was not to win, but to contain. This makes you doomed in the begining. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I know it wont be nearly as long as vietnam and we arent even going to use our reserves probably.

Think about it vietnam was in the dense jungles of indonesia where you can hide anywhere and ambush your enemy.

In a desert ummh... you cant even hide tanks under the sand because the sand on top cools diffrently in the night.

    There wont be a draft.

It's obviously for re-election and getting people distracted from other domestic policies to me.
(And damn it to hell, it works so fine.)

    1 weeks and 4 days.
I doubt Hussein can stand up to such a full scale invasion there.

Who is to say it won't turn into a guerrila war? That is my fear.

If Saddam is smart, and he really wants to hurt us, that is what he will do. Guerilla tactics really have the capacity to hurt our troops, and will draw out the conflict for a long time, even after we capture Baghdad.

I'm afraid it's turned into a gurilla war already! Brittish marines are getting drawn into street figting as we speak and as youve already heard those National Guardsmen were ambushed and captured. It's not looking too healthy guys.
