If you're upgrading a previous system, you can get top-of-the-line AMD gear at ncix.com for about $500 (excellent mobo, 2.5ghz proc, 512mb ddr ram).
Is the "double monitor" really necessary? That alone is probably adding up to $500 to the price tag.
Anyhow, that's just my opinion. Anything over $1500 for a system is too expensive, IMO, unless you must have the latest and greatest.

I suppose it's a reasonable price if you have a money.
and WTH, 2 HDs? why?
just get one really big one (would shave off some $$)
and are you buying a rig or assembeling your self?
I would also say go with the AMD and if you have the $$ to throw at it, get the higher end vid card
Oh and as far as amd vs pentium, right now they are about the same price. In fact, the P4 cpu's are a bit cheaper for some of them. If you are buying parts here you may want to look into the P4 2.4B instead of the 2.6 as its like $70USD (dunno about canadian) cheaper.

3,500.00 CAD = 2,376.44 USD
As for the whole AMD vs Intel debate, few facts:
-Lower processor speeds are way cheaper if you go the AMD way (like AMD AthlonXP 1800+ to AMD AthlonXP 2400+) above that, Intel is a bit cheaper.
-AMD's generate more heat but are often faster then their Intel counter-parts.
The current processor situation is pretty equal. In the past, Intel was much more expensive but ran faster and with more stability, but nowadays, weither you go the Intel or AMD route, you will always get your dollar's worth.
Setting 2 80gig HDD in raid would be fast! Just make sure they are 7200rpm with a 8MB cache and that they are running with the new fluid technologie instead of the old ball bearing one.
I wouldn't recommand a GeForce4 ti4200. It ain't top of the line anymore, and it won't run your games or applications with the kinda performance such a system is worthy of.
Go for either a GeForce4 ti4600 128MB (but those are pretty expensive) or an Ati Readon 9700 Pro 128MB, or a 9800 Pro 128MB.
I would suggest you wait for the month to end 'cause a few more ATI cards will be released on the market (the 9500, 9600 and 9800). As such, current prices should drop, and give you more choice.
For a video card, I wouldn't recommand the GeForce FX line of cards. A good ATI Radeon 9700 Pro or 9800 Pro should be pretty nice.
I'd recommand 1GB of ram, the fastest your motherboard can support.
As for mouse: Go the Optical way! Logitech has a few nice ones that are pretty good deal.
Double Monitor? ARe you sure you need this. If so, 19" monitors are a pretty good deal nowadays.
Don't overlook a nice sound system (good sound card and speakers).
Good luck!
indeed, though contrastly, intel CPUs are more stable. less heat = less errors.
And as far as RAM goes, I really don't think that a pure gamer (not doing development things) would absolutely NEED 1gb ram just yet. Sure it would be nice if you're on no budget whatsoever, but 512MB is more than adaquate for everything on the horizon, including DOOM III...
